External microcontroller interfaces are conceptually replaced by mocks and stub.
It was great fun to co-exhibit with our Partner @SEGGERMicro at last weeks @emBOconference .
For Cortex-M based microcontroller, we use their J-Link technology inside the ExecutionPlatform to flash test binaries. The user can also open Segger Ozone and debug the test remotely!
Today we are previewing the next generation ExecutionPlatform at @emBOconference.
It has built-in support for connecting an external logic anaylzer that lets you view any of your microcontroller pins.

@meetingcpp@aswath2481 It depends on your available ram/flash. Unity is very light-weight and will run on all cortex-m targets. But it is C. If you can make flash available in the order of > 200-300kB gtest (cpp) will work great on embedded targets.
Something that old boring process literature talk about (Toyota, The Goal etc) that applies to software engineering 10000000% is that minimizing the size of the feedback loop is much more important for productivity than minimizing idleness
