Researchers from the University of New Mexico have made a disturbing discovery, finding microplastics in the testicles of all 23 human samples they studied.

This study revealed 12 types of microplastics, with polyethylene—commonly found in plastic bags and bottles—being the most prevalent. The concentration of these microplastics in testicular tissue was significantly higher than previously measured in human blood. These particles, smaller than five millimeters, can enter the body through plastic packaging, food, tap water, and even the air we breathe, and have been linked to various health issues, including cancer and fertility problems.

Lead author Dr. Xiaozhong John Yu emphasized that the study aims to raise awareness rather than incite fear, encouraging lifestyle changes to reduce exposure to microplastics. The research was inspired by earlier findings of microplastics in human placentas, prompting concerns about their impact on reproductive health. The study also included canine testicular samples, which showed a direct correlation between microplastic volume and reduced sperm counts in dogs.

The study’s findings are particularly alarming given the global decline in sperm counts. A 2022 report highlighted a 51.6% drop in sperm count between 1973 and 2018, attributing it to multiple environmental factors, including possibly microplastics. The presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic in the testicular tissue was noted as especially concerning due to its chemical properties that disrupt spermatogenesis and the endocrine system.

The human tissue samples were anonymized and obtained from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, collected during autopsies and stored for up to seven years. The team’s analysis involved chemically dissolving organic material from the tissues to isolate microplastics, which were then identified using mass spectrometry.

As the issue of microplastic pollution gains more attention, with evidence linking it to inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease, 175 UN member countries have committed to developing a global plastics treaty.

Dr. Yu urges further research to fully understand the long-term effects of microplastics on reproductive health and other bodily functions.

@RobertoGallardo Ya eso se me sale de las manos profe, la verdad no creo que sea un grave problema, puesto que hasta las compus usadas y los celulares se venden relativamente bien. El que anda buscando EV usado no le importa tener lo último tampoco, entonces no creo que sea igual que un cel nuevo
