A kiss that history never forgot.
I painted this scene of Emiliano Zapata and Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, the wealthy son-in-law of Porfirio Díaz. According to a long-standing rumor, Zapata worked in Mier's stables as a young man and the two became lovers. Whether true or not, the story survived the Revolution and became one of the most famous queer legends attached to Zapata's name.
For Pride Month, I'm sharing the stories, rumors, and possibilities that remind us queer people have always been part of history.
