Warren Buffett on whether college is worth it:

"I actually was not keen on going to college myself."

Most people assume the world's greatest investor would champion elite education. Warren Buffett's answer is more honest than that.

When asked whether business school is worth it, he cuts straight to what most advisors won't say:

"It much more depends on the person than it depends on the school."

Buffett then reveals something surprising about his own path. He didn't want to go to college at all. His father had to talk him into it.

"My dad kind of jollied me into it. He could get me to do anything."

He explains why he was resistant:

"I knew I could have a good time and I liked investing and I didn't really feel I could learn from the books."

For Buffett, college felt like a detour from what he was already driven to do. He wasn't disengaged from learning. He was deeply engaged in his learning, on his own terms.

He extends this logic beyond business school to college itself:

"I don't even think it's important that every person go to college at all. We have all kinds of jobs at $70,000 or $80,000 a year where college training is not of use."

His real concern is the cost of going without a clear reason:

"It's a big commitment to take four years, and the cost involved, and maybe the loans involved and everything... There ought to be a reason you're going. And I didn't really see much reason."

His framework is simple: some people will get a lot from advanced education. Some will get very little. The school matters far less than whether you are the kind of person who will extract value from it. And whether you have a genuine reason to be there.

The question worth asking isn't "Is college worth it?"
