Thank you @cleeprof for being an amazing prof!! One of the things I learned from #engl480 is the importance of self-care. Being able to take care of yourself, others, and the stories we encountered in this course is something that I will carry with me. Gonna miss you all <3
I really appreciate the novel ending on a good note because it brings the reader a great sense of resilience and love, especially after we'd been exposed to so much darkness. There's a sense in which the novel took care of us (readers), in the end #engl480
does the dream sequence constitute of yet another world in which one can communicate with another, with somehow even better results than say, the internet? what effect does the dream world have on real events? does it enhance or challenge reality? #engl480#philosophicalquestions
@jennystomatoes Same! however the reading for wed was rough. I literally had to put the book down a several times to avoid looking like I just died on the inside or bawling my eyes out in front of strangers. #engl480
@kacey_ng I don't know if you've had the experience, but GT can be crazy weird at times, maybe that's just before and it's better now, but I honestly prefer anything to GT, like wordref or linguee, for ex. but I'm biased.
I love the presence of Ruth& Oliver in the novel. I feel like their dialogue provides a buffer to some of the difficult parts of Nao's diary. They're also such a cute couple. The island is in a way a haven to the 'other worlds' outside #engl480
just wondering...couldn't she have Wordreferenced that? but I guess even that requires at least a basic level of French and web accessibility, and French can be tricky sometimes. And I must admit that I do love getting Francophone friends to translate things for me #engl480
Nao's experience at her great-grandmother's temple brings back childhood memories of when my mother used to take me to Chinese Buddhist temples to pray, and of watching my grandmother, who is Buddhist, pray at home #engl480
I tried the Zazen exercise on p. 181, and it felt extremely peaceful, like time had slowed down. Definitely recommend for mid-November paper/exam stress #engl480
"I'm reaching forward through time to touch you...you're reaching back to touch me" Nao's self-conscious diary speaks across genres. Not only diaries, but archives, literary works e.g. novels demonstrate the relationship btw past (writer) & present (reader) #engl480
"everything I write will be historically true and empowering to women, and not a lot of foolish geisha crap" by introducing her feminist and anarchist great-grandmother who is a nun, how does Nao deconstruct stereotypes, frame for the 'diary of a 16 yr old Japanese girl'?#engl480

Reading Miss Orient(ed) and feeling the ridiculousness of a Beauty Pageant dictating what *gasp* oriental beauty is, which is 'you must be paradoxes' but not 'everyone is beautiful however they like to be' (sad face) #engl480
