#engl480 Today's disc made me think of a video series I came across, Uncanny Terrain. Jpns farmers in Fukushima who chose to stay on their ancestral land to do what they can to make it better for future generations. "Stay-jin", to restore their land. https://t.co/8LxJiBJoHe
@VictoriaMoon1 Agree.. intimate experiences with death/dying really have a way of softening the sharp edges of our experiences with life. Relationships being a significant part of that. Beautiful to read and to think about. #engl480
"..I was able to...locate an old email that Harry must have sent me, which, I must confess, I hardly recall ever receiving." (Dr. Ron, 381) Would be odd that he has no memory of this lengthy and signif email. Note that he found this AFTER Ruth's dream! #engl480
"..we walked home in silence, stopping once at a vending machine so he could buy me a Pulpy." (389) I love the subtle contrast of Nao's dad buying her her favourite drink, with the earlier detail of Nao buying her dad coffee from the vending machine and cigarettes. #engl480
@DanielleTan4 Me too! When I was doing the reading for wed, I actually looked forward to the Ruth parts - it felt like like a breather from those Nao parts that are important to the story but also very upsetting #engl480
@kacey_ng ..And then she believes that she does lose "you", her only friend: "i know you don't exist and no one is ever going to read this. I'm just sitting here on this stupid bus stop bench, drinking a can of too sweet coffee, pretending that I have a friend to write to." #engl480
@thisiscymary Yes! It almost feels like the more information/stimulation we have, the greater the compression and speed of time.. maybe cuz we're "missing" certain moments? #engl480
The reading section for wed is hard to read, emotionally. But I'm seeing that despite all the horrible things, love is still a common theme. Staghorn beetles, highschool girls, waves... the Yasutani's really do love each other. #engl480
Haruki # 1 plunging into the waves, ready for a death for peace. Jiko fighting the waves of her son dying as a kamikaze, learning "how to open up her heart so that the whale could swim away" (180). Nao trying to bully the waves she later lets wash over her. Letting go #engl480
(2/2)"..It no longer made any sense at all..I just threw away half the book..It felt like such a relief." It was after this that Ozeki wrote the tsunami + character Ruth into ttb. Thinking back to Fri disc. on world events sparking proliferation of knowledge (+ books?). #engl480
(1/2) Ozeki began ttb in 2006, gave it to her editor early 2011..
β'Then the earthquake and tsunami hit...Japan was changed. And I realized that the book I had just written was irrelevant.β #engl480

Themes in "ethnic stories" of immigrant families (doubly immigrant in this case?). Kids living to please/return the favour to parents. Parents living for their kids. "I want to find the meaning of my life for my daughter". touching + sad. #engl480
@chartheshark304 "...including his 57-year-old homeroom teacher who was aware the student hadnβt died." (2/2)
Striking similarities to the students' "funeral" for Nao. Teachers joining in too - heartbreaking. Systemic issues w/ promotion mechanisms, reputation, emphasis on uniformity #engl480
@chartheshark304 "One student came to class to find his desk had been transformed into a memorial, with a wreath and a picture of him in the center, incense lit and a condolence card filled with mocking messages from students and some teachers.." (1/2) #engl480
