The Sultan of Sokoto walked into Aso Rock on March 15, 2026.

The highest spiritual and traditional authority of Nigeria's Muslims. A man whose word carries weight across the entire North. He reportedly made one request. Release El-Rufai or charge him properly in court.

Weeks later El-Rufai was still in detention. Bail conditions designed to be impossible. A surety must be a Grade Level 17 civil servant with property in Maitama or Asokoro. An attestation from the Kaduna Traditional Council. Courts have upheld these conditions. The Sultan's plea changed nothing.

Now contrast this with Sunday Igboho.

In 2021 the DSS raided his house, declared him wanted, and called him a terrorist. Traditional rulers from the South-West intervened. The Olubadan. The Ooni of Ife. Tinubu removed Igboho's name from the wanted list. No trial. No formal judicial process. A presidential decision based on the intercession of South-West royal fathers.

The same president who listened to an Oba ignored the Sultan.

The same principle that freed a man declared wanted for terrorism cannot apparently free a former governor awaiting trial on corruption charges.

If that is not the definition of selective justice nobody has explained what the definition is.

Now Islamic scholars and traditional rulers are being mobilised across the North to endorse Tinubu for 2027. They are being asked to tell their communities that a second term will bring transformation. They are being asked to use their spiritual authority to deliver northern votes.

The question they must answer first is simple.

If the Sultan of Sokoto could not secure a fair hearing for El-Rufai when the President needed northern goodwill, which District Head or Sheikh does anyone believe will be heard in a second term when the election is already won?

A leader who disregards the Sultan when he needs votes will disregard every lesser authority when he no longer needs them.

Sheikh Alkali Abubakar Zaria criticised this administration and was suspended. The message was not subtle. Dissenting voices from religious figures are welcome until they become inconvenient.

The North has endured the worst insecurity in this administration. Bandits carry anti-aircraft weapons. Generals die in captivity. Schools exist without walls. Children sit on dirt floors. And the Sultan's plea for a son of the North gathers dust in Aso Rock.

These scholars and traditional rulers must ask themselves one question before mounting any pulpit for 2027.

Can you, in good conscience, ask your followers to trust a man who has demonstrated he will not trust your own leader?

The Sultan spoke. Nigeria watched. The answer was silence and continued detention.

2027 is coming. Vote with your eyes open. Not with your sheikh's endorsement in your ears.

2. He recommended him to Olusegun Obasanjo, who appointed him as Senior Adviser to the President during his tenure as Minister of the FCT.

3. As Governor, he appointed him as Political Adviser.

4. He supported and helped him secure election to the Senate for four years.

5. Above all, he chose him as his successor as Governor of Kaduna State.

But he repaid him by:

1. Ensuring that he celebrated his birthday in detention.

2. Observing Ramadan in detention.

3. Spending two Eid celebrations in detention.

4. Losing his mother while he had remained in detention for over 100 days.

The story of the doctor whose eight patients were waiting for him to see them, who passed away a few minutes after arriving at the hospital, is humbling and a reminder that death can come at any time.

It was said that he left home in good condition, but when he arrived at the hospital and opened the door of his car, some of his colleagues noticed that he was not walking properly and looked dizzy. They quickly came to his aid. A few minutes later, he was declared dead. All of his waiting patients were shocked.

However, the good news is that he was heard reciting the Kalimat al-Shahadah as his last words.

This reminds me of a young, arrogant medical doctor at UMTH who spoke to my father arrogantly, thinking he was the giver of health, not knowing that he too could fall sick and die at any time.

May Allah rest his soul and grant us a beautiful end.
