“There is no greater illusion than fear, no greater wrong than preparing to defend yourself, no greater misfortune than having an enemy. Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe.” ~Stephen Mitchell, Tao Te Ching
'It is so futile to weary your life with the politics of fashioning a persona in order to meet the expectations of other people'.
— John O'Donohue, Anam Cara
How to develop confidence:
Put yourself in the unknown, with no plan nor agenda and just the notion that whatever happens you will handle it.
Shouldn't confidence come from competence?
The opposite. What grows with competence is your comfort zone - it reduces the unknown.
Confidence is your relationship with fear.
A comfort zone is there to push fear away.
You don't need to be brave.
Release your attachment to fear and drive in.
Be fear-less.
Go into the unknown.
If you are unsure of a course of action, do not attempt it.
Your doubts and hesitations will infect your execution.
Timidity is dangerous: Better to enter with boldness.
Any mistakes you commit through audacity are easily corrected with more audacity.
Everyone admires the bold; no one honors the timid.
The wasteland, then, is the land of people living inauthentic lives, doing what they 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 they must do to live; not spontaneously in the affirmation of life, but dutifully, obediently, and even grudgingly because that is the way people are living.
— Joseph Campbell
I have become convinced that the psychological problem of today is a spiritual problem. Man hungers & thirsts for a safe relationship to the psychic forces within himself. His consciousness lacks a relationship to safe spiritual conditions. This makes him neurotic..~CG Jung
“Paradise,” he said, “is hidden in each one of us, it is concealed within me, too, right now, and if I wish, it will come for me in reality, tomorrow even, and for the rest of my life.”~Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
To be eccentric, not to fit in, to hear our own drummer, these are the signs of our bringing our gift, our personhood, to the table of life. It sounds so simple, but it is so difficult.~James Hollis
Are you living in survival mode? Here are three signs you might be living by the hormones of stress … and how to return to your natural state of wholeness and health.
One of the most beautiful gifts in the world is the gift of encouragement. When someone encourages you, that person helps you over a threshold you might otherwise never have crossed on your own.
— John O'Donohue, Eternal Echoes
Jung once told me that any man who comes into your consulting room will either be 21 or 45 years of age no matter his chronological age because his problems will be that he can't get into life or can't get out of life. Those are the only 2problems a man ever has~Robert A. Johnson
"You have to accept looking cringe to get what you want"
Inverted wisdom.
Pursuing what you want is cool. Not pursuing it is cringe.
Also forget the "how do you look like while doing it".
Let that be other people's problem.
You - do.
You be.
No high aiming man should fear the labels cast by average consciousness towards him on his ascent to greatness. Passing through people's negative opinions is a rite of passage for greatness as your convictions will inevitably be tested by the doubt and criticism that finds itself at your feet on the journey to greatness. Without disobedience man would know no more or be no more than the neanderthals who preceded him. No planes would hurl through the sky, or beautiful buildings stand tall if it wasn't for man's original virtue. Disobedience. Oscar wilde said this many years before me
When the Buddha had achieved enlightenment [i.e. created the philosopher's stone], the gods asked him to teach others [transmute 'base metals' into more noble forms].
It doesn't end with you—it extends beyond you. This is the ultimate goal of alchemy and is called 'projection'.
