#OTD June 5, 1978: a series of “movement tests” are filmed with Alien suit actor Bolaji Badejo. Principal photography was still a month away at this point, but this footage certainly inspired confidence that this would be much different than other man-in-a-suit aliens.

What the Artemis II astronauts did over the last 10 days was a testament to their bravery. And the fact that they traveled farther from Earth than anyone ever has, re-entered our atmosphere at more than 24,000 mph, and splashed down safely was a testament to human ingenuity. Thanks to everyone at @NASA for making this mission possible, and for taking us along for the ride.

Jerry Goldsmith was born on this day in 1929. He composed some incredible scores, Chinatown, Poltergeist, Alien, Planet of the Apes, and more. One of his most famous pieces is the Dry Dock sequence in Star Trek: The Motion Picture: a six minute sequence as Scotty and Kirk fly around the USS Enterprise. Slow, yes—but vital. Star Trek had been off the air for a decade, and fans knew the ship mostly from grainy TVs. This is not only Kirk’s reunion, but ours too. Goldsmith’s soaring music turns it from a technical showcase into an anthem—the return of a cultural icon.
