The National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta is now officially reopened after a $58 million expansion that adds 24,000 square feet of exhibit, classroom, and event space and a new emphasis on the 1860s Reconstruction Era following the end of the Civil War.

This comes as many places around the country, from the Smithsonian Institution to national parks, are under pressure to cut so-called divisive concepts out of how they teach American history.

In March, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing all federally controlled sites to remove what his administration calls racially centered ideology.

We cannot go with the wave of what's happening outside our doors," said Kama Pierce, chief program officer at NCCHR. "It's important that we exist, that we don't get caught up in all of the politics, but that we are here and we exist and we exist 100 years from now."
