URGENT: July 31 was supposed to be Finn Renard’s last day as a junior lifeguard intern in San Diego.

He was 17. The anchor swimmer. His team was behind. He ran into Mission Bay and dove hard to catch up.

His head hit the ocean floor.
He was knocked out. His neck was broken. Fellow lifeguards pulled him out and kept him alive long enough to reach Scripps Memorial in La Jolla.
Surgeons replaced a vertebra and fused his cervical spine. For a few days, his family thought he was turning a corner. He sat up. He talked. Teammates visited.

Then his lungs failed. He was intubated. Later placed on ECMO.

He has some movement in his arms. Not in his hands or legs. He was supposed to start senior year this month. He wanted to be a pilot. His family had moved to Texas, but every summer he came back to this program because he loved it.

Before surgery, he asked them to take the mask off.

He thanked the team for doing everything they could to keep him alive.
That is who he is.

Finn is still in the fight. His family is still in a hospital far from home. The road ahead is long — ICU, rehab, maybe Craig Hospital in Colorado.

A boy who spent his summer learning to save other people now needs people to stand with him.
