Donald Trump in April of 2016: “We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt. . . I think I could do it fairly quickly. . . Over a period of eight years.”

I suppose this qualifies as what the White House calls “promises made, promises kept.”

Trump has in fact gotten rid of our $19 trillion dollar national debt . . . and replaced it with our $40 trillion dollar national debt.

In 5+ years as President, rather than eliminating or even reducing the debt, Trump has heaped another $11.3 trillion dollars of IOUs on the backs of future generations to pay off.

The U.S. government will take in about $5.25 trillion in revenue this year and a trillion of that will go to pay the interest due on the money we’ve borrowed because of the gross ineptitude of our leaders. In addition, our “leaders” will spend about $2 trillion more this year than the government will take in, so the debt pile will climb even higher.

It’s not that this debt bomb can’t be defused, it’s that our political leaders don’t have the will to defuse it. They’ll continue to enrich their oligarch owners at the expense of their working class constituents, and they’ll continue to ignore the debt bomb until it explodes at which time they’ll work feverishly to point fingers at everyone except themselves.

Of course the gravity of the nation’s financial peril pales in comparison to more weighty issues like rewriting our history to assuage the delicate feelings of fragile white men and building gold plated edifices to honor the stable genius that rid us of our $19 trillion dollar national debt.
