The diseases were inevitable and unavoidable. And also unintentional, at that point. Germ theory didn't exist yet, and the smallpox blanket thing wasn't til way later. This was going to happen, whether it was Columbus, any of the guys who came after him, or even a Chinese explorer coming from the other direction. Those pandemics just sort of happened. Remember, a hundred years before then, Europe lost between a third and a full one half of its population to the black death.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 gives the only requirements necessary to be eligible for the office of the presidency. Notice, the distinction is "being eligible for the office of the president", not "eligible to be elected to the office of the president". The legal argument he's going to make is that he's eligible for the office of the president even if he's ineligible to be elected to the office. The 22nd amendment added further, narrow, language pertaining exclusively to electability, but it didn't amend the 3 core requirements outlined in Article II. If he finds away to become president without being elected to the job, through the line of succession, most likely, he's actually not run afoul of the 22nd in any way. This has just never been tried before so its gonna be a shit show.

@TrueeMuu2 @andrewwaustin @TheMG3D Ok, but I'm saying that he's saying being elected isn't the only way to become president and, rules as written, he's correct. Will this survive judicial review? Debatable. But if he wants even a partial third term, that's the avenue he's going to pursue.

He could. As far as I know, the qualifications to be vice president are the same as being president. Ne a natural born citizen, be 35 or older and be a resident of the US for at least 14 years. As long as whoever the hypothetical running mate is isn't from Florida like Trump is, (Vice president and president can't be from the same state) it's constitutionally sound. Again, being eligible to be elected president is very different from being eligible to be president. I promise you, if he does this, that's the legal workaround he and his team going to use.

He actually could. The amendment just says he can't be elected president more than twice, but being elected isn't the only way to become president. He could be whomever's vice president. That dude resigns 6 months in, Trump's appointed to fill out the term. There is not the same constitutional wiggle room for Mamdani, since he is ineligible for the office at all since he isn't a natural born citizen. That is pretty iron clad. Being eligible to be president and being eligible to be elected president are two very different metrics to meet.
