So this is why it is important to understand accounting and financial statement analysis. Aradel’s Q1 2026 is reflective of all its business interests, including Renaissance.

The earnings were, of course, very strong, but they also came with expenses, the most notable of which was increased finance costs.

Reported profit to shareholders stood at ₦66bn in Q1 2026. But of course, I will normalise my own. There was ₦209bn in other income, resulting from overlifting. Normally, overlifting and underlifting are part of operations, but when they are significant, proper analysis requires you to strip them out.

In oil and gas accounting, an overlift occurs when a partner in a joint venture lifts (takes and sells) more crude oil or gas than its entitlement share of production during a period.

Say a field produces 100k barrels, and Coy A owns 40%, then it means the coy’s entitlement is 40k barrels. If Coy A actually lifts and sells 50k barrels, it has overlifted by 10k barrels, and that means it has effectively sold some barrels that economically belong to its partners. They will need to settle in the future (i.e., a liability has been created).

The same (reverse) pattern works when a coy underlifts.

The profit that accrues to Aradel’s shareholders is ₦66bn (normalised to ₦45bn).

Seplat’s reported profit after tax is ₦52bn (normalised to ₦229bn - adjusted for “other expense” and the “tax impact”).

Look at the wide variance in earnings per share. If you can not properly read these things, you may end up working with misleading results. Another way to rationalise the numbers is to focus on ‘Operating profit”
