Before anyone gets worked up about MAGA, Christianity, or hypocrisy, we need to identify the core confusion that makes the whole debate stupid from the outset: most people don’t understand that Jesus’s ministry and post-Nicene Christianity are not the same thing. One was a direct assault on idol-worship, performative righteousness, and authoritarian moral policing; the other became a standardized imperial narrative designed to enforce conformity.

Once you see that distinction, the MAGA phenomenon becomes almost darkly comedic. Here we have a movement claiming to “follow Christ,” while faithfully reenacting the exact behaviors Christ condemned: tribal identity, enforced narrative loyalty, and symbolic idolatry. And the bitter irony is that this authoritarian narrative enforcement, insisting everyone recite the correct slogans and defer to the correct leader, is precisely the sort of behavior the right likes to accuse the left of. They don’t realize they’ve simply produced their own version of it. That isn't the absence of a double standard, it’s the double standard as sacrament.

So before any debate even begins, the piercing question is this: are you talking about Jesus, the anti-authoritarian truth-seeker, or the post-Nicene narrative machine built to control belief? If you don’t know the difference, every argument afterwards is just noise and self-congratulation disguised as theology. If Jesus showed up now, he wouldn’t salute the flag or chant the slogans, he’d laugh the whole enterprise out of the room, and then ask why the self-declared disciples are reenacting the precise moral failures he spent his life exposing.
