We wanted our ship mechanic to heal Vehicles, but also wanted to differentiate from Obi-Wan, Patient Mentor. We were surprised that, in a format full of pilots, healing 2 damage was an oppressive power in draft! So we made a sequencing condition to limit her a little #FFGStaff
With this set being so tempo-driven (thanks to pilots), both draft and premiere really needed inexpensive ways to deal with big units, at whatever the cost. So we included some powerful cheap events that let you take damage to deal damage #FFGStaff
For a while, this card was all 2s, but we ran into a problem: it too trivially invalidated round 1, since it could always bounce everything that got played. The multi-bounce was important to keep, so it moved up to 3 cost so the opponent could have some counterplay #FFGStaff
This card's first draft was much wordier: "Defeat a non-leader unit. You may trigger that unit's When Defeated abilities instead of its controller." More obviously a Thrawn card this way, but was weird in the rules. "Borrow control" was a brilliantly clean solution! #FFGStaff
I was extremely skeptical of this leader being common for much of development because of how restrictive his deckbuilding is. But Jeremy & MJ were able to put enough When Defeated abilities at common that Thrawn is now totally draftable, so I was proven wrong! #FFGStaff
@Myr213 Yes, the part of the ability that returns the resource is a lasting effect that's being applied to the resource. Once you take control of the resource initially, you've resolved DJ's ability and removing the ability won't retroactively undo it #FFGStaff
For a set debuting piloting, we wanted to make a bunch of common pilots. However, the mechanic is naturally complex, so how could we keep our commons simple? The key was making the unit and upgrade functionally identical for the common pilots #FFGStaff
We went into Year 2 with a desire to push boundaries a bit more, and that includes two-card combos. We don't want win-the-game combos, but that's why these numbers are the way they areโfor much of development, Devastator was harder to kill & Bombardment did more damage #FFGStaff
@darthmyyk@trc_terpstra Opponent controls the ship, you control Poe. You can use Poe's ability to move him onto a friendly ship. He just doesn't fall off when the opponent borrows his ship
I've been cross-posting between Twitter and Bluesky for the last couple months. Now that BS has grown as it has, I intend to stop posting here after February. Come join me on the other site!
People LOVE Star Destroyers. However, their size & relative cost means they can't be a deck's main strategy. An unconditional discount on big units is very risky, so we debated Piett a lotโbut people love the Capital Ship deck so much we decided the risk was worth it #FFGStaff
@trc_terpstra Probably! I have no idea what the payout/prize wall prices are, but they should be accessible to someone playing in events the whole weekend
Indirect damage on its own is pretty weak, so how to synergize with it? Lots of 1 damage "ping" effects can punish players who leave their units with 1HP, and extremely aggressive rewards for leaving damaged units on the board are two ways to do it! #FFGStaff
@trc_terpstra Black Squadron is a squadron in the Resistance led by Poe Dameron. Victor Squadron is a squadron in the Galactic Empire led by Darth Vader. #FFGStaff
