Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki passes away at the age of 95.
The news brought back memories of interviewing her during my Express days.
It was in November 2014; one afternoon I called her
to fix an appointment with her for a face to face interview. I had briefly spoken to her before that for an Anjali Devi tribute earlier that year.
I was unsure if she would entertain a face to face interaction, but she did. I thanked her profusely and hung up. Within five minutes, I received a call from her. She asked me if I were a vegetarian, I said yes. And she told me she would cook lunch for me and I must eat with her when we met. I reluctantly agreed, even as I was in awe of her hospitality, and excited about the invitation.
So, it was a Monday when I met her finally. She was ready, but she jokingly pointed out I was early by 15 minutes.
Dressed in a pink saree, she looked regal. After admonishing her house help for misplacing her safety pins, she sat me down for the interview. I insisted we took her pictures first and she cooperated without complaints. One shot in the living room of her home in Teynampet and another in the balcony. The grey skies rendered the perfect backdrop for the photos and they came out amazingly well.
Then we began the chat from the days when she was in her teens, her initial work in radio, and the stiff opposition from her family when she told them about becoming an actress.
But actress she was ordained to be. She faced arc lights soon as a married woman, to support her new family. I came in front of the camera right from the kitchen, she said. I could feel her pain and pride in that one line.
"Well, I did quite well, you know. Signed some great films with legendary co-stars from NT Rama Rao to Sivaji Ganesan, acted with Kamal and Rajini," she winked as she recounted her journey.
I told her i liked her in Iru Kodugal and she said, "I know, I underplayed it."
She asked me what other movies I had watched and was happy that I could list quite a few. I did some sad roles, she said. "Some stories were like my life's," she said, but quickly pointed out I shouldn't mention her personal failures. "No point talking about it now, these are old stories," she said. I assured her I won't, though she also opened up about what went wrong.
I confessed I couldn't help admire her spoken English. "Oh that," she exclaimed laughing and spoke about the course she pursued after marriage.
When it was time for lunch, she fussed over me like an affectionate granny, scolding me for not taking enough rice and sambar. And also remarked I should eat well, since I was set to get married in a few months. A tasty home-cooked meal played its own role as a leveller in our conversation.
I had also watched her Hindi movie Prem Geet. "I spoke my dialogues. I believed in learning the language," she remarked. And laughed when I said I only liked that one song from the movie.
A picture of hers from her heyday near the table drew my attention and I commented how beautiful she looked in it. She blushed, adding her sister Krishna Kumari was prettier.
We had spoken for over an hour about everything-- her story, her co stars and her life after retirement.
She told she was visiting her daughter, and showed me the sarees she had brought in the trip-- half a dozen in bright shades. "I live in Bengaluru now..My mother had wanted us sisters to give each other company in the later years. but I visit Chennai often," she said.
It was time to leave and she reminded me to tell her when the article appeared. I promised her I would. She gave me a chocolate, asking me to give it to my mom, as I had told her she admired her acting, when we began our conversation.
Here was a woman who never had an easy life but she seemed the most assured and calm person akin to an ascetic. So much dignity and grace. No regrets or melancholy just learnings and experiences to share with the younger generation.

‘இராமாநுசன் அடிப்பூ மன்னவே’ — நம் எம்பெருமானார் உடையவரின் திவ்விய சரித்திரத்தைக் கல்கியின் ‘பொன்னியின் செல்வன்’ பாணியில் ஒரு நாவலாக எழுத வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இதைத் தொடங்கினேன். இதற்காகப் பல சம்பிரதாயப் பனுவல்களையும் குருபரம்பரை நூல்களையும் ஆழமாகப் படிக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. அதனால் இது என் மனதிற்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமான ஒரு பணியாக அமைந்தது.

இதை எழுதிய தருணங்களில், நாமும் நம் பூர்வாசாரியர்களுடனேயே வாழ்ந்து பயணிக்கிறோம் போன்றதொரு அனுபவம் எனக்குக் கிடைத்தது (படிக்கும் உங்களுக்கும் அந்த ஆத்மார்த்தமான அனுபவம் கிட்டும் என்று நம்புகிறேன்).

மூலக் கருவோ அல்லது வரலாற்று உண்மைகளோ சற்றும் மாறாமல், ஓர் எழுத்தாளனுக்குரிய படைப்புச் சுதந்திரத்தோடு சில கற்பனைக் காட்சிகளை இதில் சேர்த்துள்ளேன். உதாரணமாக, கதை நகரும் போது பெய்யும் மழை, நாதமுனிகள் நாலாயிர திவ்வியப் பிரபந்தத்தைத் தேடிச் சென்ற வழித்தடங்கள் போன்றவை. இச்சிறு சுதந்திரங்களை வாசகர்கள் பெருந்தன்மையோடு ஏற்றுக்கொள்வீர்கள் என நம்புகிறேன்.

It's like taking pride in brushing your teeth daily. It's maintenance, not an achievement.

ஸ்ரீ உ.வே. வேளுக்குடி கிருஷ்ணன் ஸ்வாமிகள் திருநக்ஷத்திர பதிவு

என் அப்பாவிற்குப் பிறகு ஸ்ரீ வைஷ்ணவத்தில் அடியேனை மேலே ஏற்றிவிட்டவர் ஸ்ரீ உ.வே. வேளுக்குடி கிருஷ்ணன் ஸ்வாமிகள் என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது.

சிலர் அருமையாகப் பேசுவார்கள்; சிலர் தெளிவாகப் பேசுவார்கள். ஆனால் நம் வேளுக்குடி ஸ்வாமியோ இரண்டையும் ஒருங்கே சேர்த்துச் செய்யக்கூடியவர். தன் நலம் கருதாது தினமும் ’என் பணி’, மற்றும் பல ஊர்களுக்குச் சென்று உபன்யாசம் என என்னைப் போன்ற பலருக்கு நல்வழிகாட்டியாகத் திகழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

‘Attention to details’ என்பதற்கு மிகச் சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு ஸ்வாமிதான். அவருடன் பல யாத்திரைகள் அடியேன் சென்றபோது அவரது நிர்வாகத் திறமையைக் கண்டு வியந்திருக்கிறேன். எந்த அறையின் குழாயில் தண்ணீர் வரவில்லை என்பதில் தொடங்கி...60 கரண்டி, 32 பாத்திரங்கள் தொலைந்துபோன கணக்கு வரை! நள்ளிரவு 1 மணி ரயிலுக்கு முந்தைய நாள் தேதியில் தவறாக முன்பதிவு செய்தவர்களைப் பதற்றப்பட வைக்காமல், "கவலைப்படாதீர்கள்" என்று ஆறுதல் கூறிய பாங்கு.. இவற்றுடன் கூடவே திருமந்திரக் காலக்ஷேபமும் தடையின்றி நடக்கும்! ஏதாவது பிரச்சனை வந்தால் அவர் அதை எதிர்கொள்ளும் விதம்—ஆழ்வார்களையும் ஆசாரியர்களையும் ஆழக் கற்றதனால் வந்த பக்குவம் என்றே சொல்லத் தோன்றும்.

ஒரு நாளைக்கு இரண்டு மணி நேரம் மட்டுமே அவர் உறங்கியிருப்பார். ஆனால், கண்ணில் எந்தவொரு களைப்பும் தெரியாமல் இங்கும் அங்கும் ஓடிக்கொண்டே இருப்பார். ஒரு சமயத்தில் அடியேன் எங்குச் சென்றாலும் அங்கு அவர் இருந்தார்! திரைப்படங்களில் வரும் ‘இரட்டை வேடம்’ போன்ற பிரமை கூட எனக்கு ஏற்பட்டது உண்டு.

உபன்யாசங்களில் தேவையற்ற அசட்டு உதாரணங்கள் எதுவும் இல்லாமல், ‘ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவம்’ என்ற ஒரே நேர்கோட்டில் பயணம் செய்து, நம்மை மெல்ல உள்ளே இழுத்து, ஆழ்வார்களையும் திவ்யதேசப் பெருமைகளையும் செவிவழியாக ஊட்டிவிட்டார். நாம் ஒரு திவ்ய தேசத்திற்கு ரயில் பிடித்து அல்லது விமானம் ஏறிச் சென்று பெருமாளைச் சேவித்துவிட்டு வரலாம். ஆனால், அந்த திவ்ய தேசத்தின் மகிமையை ஸ்வாமியின் திருவாக்கினால் கேட்டுக்கொண்டே சேவிப்பது என்பது தனித் தனித்துவமான அனுபவம்!

பத்ரி விஷால் பெருமாளைத் திருமங்கை ஆழ்வாரின் பாசுரங்கள் கொண்டு அனுபவித்ததும், திருமந்திர விளக்கத்தை ஆழ்வார் பாசுரங்களோடு கேட்டபோது பல இடங்களில் கண் கலங்கியதும் என்றும் மறக்க முடியாதவை. குறிப்பாக, கயாவில் ஒலிபெருக்கி (Mic) ஏதுமின்றி, இருபது நிமிடங்கள் கண்கலங்கி "ஏன் அம்மாவிற்கு 16 பிண்டம் வைக்கிறோம்?" என்று அவர் உருக்கமாக விளக்கிய தருணம் அடியேனின் மனதை விட்டு என்றும் அகலாது.

சில வருடங்களுக்கு முன் ஸ்ரீ உ.வே. வேளுக்குடி கிருஷ்ணன் ஸ்வாமிகளை நேரில் சந்தித்து, நமது பிரபந்தப் புத்தகத்தைச் சமர்ப்பித்து அவரிடம் ஆசீர்வாதம் பெறும் பாக்கியம் அடியேனுக்குக் கிடைத்தது.

பிரபந்தப் புத்தகத்தின் மூன்று பாகங்களையும் ஸ்வாமிகள் மிகவும் பொறுமையாகப் பார்த்தார். அட்டைப் படங்களை ரசித்து, சில பக்கங்களைப் படித்தும் பார்த்தார். குறிப்பாக அநுபந்தம் பக்கங்களை ஒவ்வொன்றாகத் திருப்பிப் பார்த்துவிட்டு, "It is a noble effort" என்று ஸ்வாமிகள் கூறிய போது, அடியேனுக்கு 'Nobel Prize' கிடைத்ததைப் போல உணர்ந்தேன்!

பெங்களூரில் என் பணி என்னவென்று கேட்டுத் தெரிந்துகொண்டவர், "5G எப்போது வரும், வந்தால் என்ன மாற்றங்கள் நிகழும்? அதனால் மேலும் என்ன கிடைக்கப் போகிறது?" என்று ஆர்வமாகக் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்துகொண்டார். அதுமட்டுமன்றி, அதைத் தொழில்நுட்பத்துடன் நிறுத்தாமல் சம்பிரதாயத்தோடு இணைத்து ஒரு சிறிய உபன்யாசமாகவே வழங்கி அருளியது அடியேனுக்குக் கிடைத்த அதிர்ஷ்டம்.

"நேரில் சந்தித்து உங்களிடம் திவ்ய பிரபந்தம் புத்தகத்தைக் கொடுத்தது மிகுந்த சந்தோஷம்!" என்று கூறி விடைபெற்றபோது, ஸ்வாமிகள் "உங்க டிரஸ்ட் லோகோ மிக அருமையாக இருக்கிறது" என்று கூறியதோடு நிற்காமல், அடியேன் என்ன மனவோட்டத்தோடு அதை உருவாக்கினேனோ, அதையே அப்படியே சுட்டிக்காட்டி விவரித்த போது ஏற்பட்ட மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு எல்லையே இல்லை!

இவர் வாழும் காலத்தில் அடியேனும் வாழ்கிறேன் என்பதே மாபெரும் பேறு.

ஸ்ரீ உ.வே. வேளுக்குடி கிருஷ்ணன் ஸ்வாமிகளின் திருநக்ஷத்திர நன்னாளில், அவர் பல்லாண்டு காலம் ஆரோக்கியத்துடன் வாழ்ந்து இந்த ஆன்மீகப் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து நடத்திட என் ஆண்டாளின் திருவடிகளைப் பிரார்த்திக்கிறேன்.
