🚛 Important update for professional drivers with diabetes

From 7 November 2025, new changes to the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999 will allow lorry and bus (Group 2) drivers who manage insulin-treated diabetes to use Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) instead of traditional finger-prick testing.

This update reflects advances in diabetes technology and aligns with the approach already adopted for car and motorcycle drivers since 2018. CGMS provide real-time glucose readings, helping drivers better manage their condition and reduce health-related risks on the road.

Diabetes remains a major but often overlooked issue in the transport sector - with thousands of commercial drivers potentially living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Earlier this year, PACTS member organisation Driving for Better Business and The Diabetes Safety Organisation published “Hiding in Plain Sight”, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness, employer education, and health support across the industry.

I have advocated for action to #StopRoadDeath for more than a decade now! I have asked numerous Ministers and Secretaries of State to meet with me to listen about the preventable death of Alice, my daughter, and what policy action could be taken. @SharronHuddles2 has done exactly the same since her daughter, Caitlin, was killed in 2017. Many many others have too!

Whilst @RicHolden did meet with me just before a reshuffle, no one else would, and nothing like today!

Me and @SharronHuddles2 were invited into @LouHaigh office with @LilianGreenwood and had a positive, constructive, honest, and supportive discussion about all things which could prevent road death, and the new strategy. Inevitably it was light on detail but we left feeling optimistic that improvements were on the way. Whether everything we would wish for is included in the strategy remains to be seen.

For now - thank you to Lilian and Louise and the @transportgovuk team. And thank you for your commitment to keep engaging and listening.

Your test is to show us what is in the strategy backed up by data and evidence, and many of us in the victim tribe, and elsewhere within the professional / academic tribes are willing to help!

It is beyond time to move forward and change - and I believe you when you say you agree!
