Autonomy is the north star—but advantage lives at every layer with clarity. Know: which layer for which objective? What risk? Who owns outcomes? The wrong layer means wasted money, bad habits, and a broken foundation.

Three questions every leadership team should answer:

- What layer are you really in? (1–4)
- AI fluency? (1 = “we have Copilot somewhere” → 10 = can architect cross-functional decisioning with ownership/controls)
- Target layer—and what are you actually doing to get there?

Vendors blur this constantly. Calling automated “autonomous” misleads, builds wrong mental models, and misses real wins.
