We're only 48 hours away from the 2019 Brian Goodwin 10k - have a read of our preview of the strongest field in the race's history https://t.co/ydwXBAyI7I
@decostop@gordygallacher@kmckenna63 But before I do, just had a think, and best contender i can think of at the moment using my criteria is probably Paula Radcliffe, who I'll put joint 2nd in my list with Faldo
@decostop@gordygallacher@kmckenna63 Golf is a sport I could accept an argument for... McIlroy probably looked like he would get there a few years ago and might still. Faldo I'll give you as a contender, but still below Murray for me just on sheer difficulty of era
@decostop@gordygallacher@kmckenna63 Disagree... easier for a talented athlete to reach number 1 in decathlon/heptathlon/snooker/track cycling/rowing etc. than to reach the top 100 in tennis. This is my main point. Others all supplementary arguments.
@decostop@gordygallacher@kmckenna63 cycling and athletics are hard to judge since they're all doped up (some more legally than others), snooker true (if you consider it a sport - I do, lots don't). but my previous points about those sports (bar long-distance running, which is highly competitive) stand
@gordygallacher@decostop@kmckenna63 i say all of this as someone who would rather not admit to a Scot being better than anyone England have ever produced :)
@gordygallacher@decostop@kmckenna63 Murray also playing in the toughest era of tennis there has ever been - the top players are better than ever, and the depth of good players is far greater
@tomwilliams1974@BBCSPOTY It just represents terrible marketing by most female sports bodies. WTA has shown it's possible to make superstars out of female athletes, and if we had a female tennis star she would win SPOTY. I can't think of another sport that has come close to doing what tennis has done.
@smorgasbord@tomwilliams1974 So you actually have the data, or are you just saying that because no-one is reporting a decline? I don't know the correct answer but I doubt anyone else debating this does either
