“If you are depressed, you are living in the past.
If you are anxious, you are living in the future.
If you are at peace, you are living in the present.”
― Lao Tzu
This Fourth of July, let us reflect with gratitude on the extraordinary nation in which we are privileged to live in. The Fourth is not just a celebration of our independence. It is a celebration of the enduring principles that define America: liberty, the rule of law, the pursuit of happiness, and the courage to strive for a more perfect union. These ideals have guided us through times of trial and triumph alike, and they remain our compass today. Happy birthday, America 🇺🇸

Your entire life will change when you realize that courage is the single most important human trait.
In 1942, author C.S. Lewis offered this brilliant characterization:
"Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality."
Courage is who you are when it's inconvenient. When no one is watching. When the rewards are uncertain. When the outcomes are unpredictable.
It's easy to declare our values, principles, and virtues in times of peace—it's hard to live by them in times of war.
Courage is defined at the testing point.
You are defined at the testing point.
The truth: Talent and intelligence are abundant. Courage is not.
There’s someone out there living the life you want simply because they had the courage to act. They aren’t smarter than you. They aren’t more talented than you. They just took action when you didn’t.
They recognized that fear comes from inexperience, not incapability. You're afraid because you haven't done it yet, not because you can't do it. Inexperience is the problem to be solved, and it's only solved through having the courage to act.
They realized that the worst prison in the world is having the talent and intelligence to achieve something great but lacking the courage to go out and do it.
They understood that the regret from inaction is always worse than the regret from action.
But here's the most empowering thought:
Courage is not born, it is chosen.
Every single day, you get to choose how you show up at your testing point. You have agency. You are at the wheel. You are in control of your future with your actions in the present.
The challenges do not get any easier—if anything, they get harder as you rise—but you get stronger. You grow. You change.
When you arrive at your testing point and choose to show up as the highest version of yourself, you become different.
The stoic philosopher Seneca once wrote:
"It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that things are difficult."
You cannot build a life of meaning, purpose, and character by taking the easy path at the testing point.
Choose to dare. Choose hard. Choose courage.
Courage now, easy later.

A clip from my talk at the @arc_forum conference in London last week.
Here, I touch on the idea that we risk losing what truly matters when our culture drifts from community and purpose.
We have to embrace connection and meaning to spark real happiness every day.
Meaning requires pain and suffering.
Why?
Because we never learn the meaning of our lives until we experience some form of suffering.
Nobody ever says, "You know, I figured out the meaning of my life during that week at the beach in Ibiza."
If I were to ask you, "When did you learn the most about what makes you who you are? How did you learn about yourself—the 'why' of you?" you'd tell me about something bad.
You’re going to tell me about something like somebody who loved you died or left, or you were afraid, or you got sick, or you lost something very dear to you, and you survived. That’s what you’re going to tell me about.
I was talking to Bernie Marcus—the guy who started Home Depot—about starting the Home Depot, and he talked about almost going bankrupt.
Why? Because that was where he figured out his resiliency. And that’s what everybody figures out—meaning requires suffering.
How we accept our fate and all the suffering it entails, how we take up our cross, gives us ample opportunity—even under the most difficult circumstances—to add a deeper meaning to our life.
I'll explore the idea of meaning and happiness at my upcoming talk in Orlando, FL, on February 27th, at Steinmetz Hall, at 7pm, for an event called "The Art & Science of Happiness."
I'll share research on happiness to help you better understand your own happiness. We'll also look at stories—from my own experience and the experience of others—to see what it means to find meaning in your life, and the practical steps that lead up to that.
I'd love it if you could join me. Find out more here: https://t.co/mq2Dlk5DUm
