Massive sequence in game 5, big turning point at the end of the 1st half
Going under/not paying the same respect to San Antonio's guards in terms of pull-up shooting increasingly got magnified as the series went on
Spurs attack Brunson, he shows and recovers (hedge) + UNDER ball-screen.
Spurs ball-screen with Castle + Luke Kornet, OG plays back, he's not deceived by Castle trying to reject the screen. They switch the lower screen and it's all Anunoby's activity from there
The Spurs loved this Horns look throughout the playoffs where you can get a big diving to the front of the rim and get a shooter popping.
A couple of things that I didn't love out of it:
- Why are you not attacking Brunson?
- Lack of a "Fix It" when the clock is running low and NY switches
This is an easy switch from NY and a great job of staying attached on the switch from OG to not let Champagnie pop for a 3.
When the defense can switch and negate an action like this so easily, I want to see you get into a simple Fix It action when you can attack mismatches or space to generate a better look.
One of the biggest reasons the Spurs' offense couldn't get it done? The Fix It moments.
When the 1st action doesn't yield a result, can you consistently generate advantages in the 2nd and 3rd triggers? Those Fix It moments define series.
Scottie Barnes, 2026 Playoffs' best-kept secret?
Eliminated in the first round, the Raptors' young star still delivered one of the most impressive individual performances of the post-season.
Here's why.

A good habit to get into as a coach is START with TEACHING the WHY behind your weakside actions. These stay consistent, regardless of the set, but are critical to half court offense.
Once these become automatic, it’s game over for the strongside/POA actions you run because the low man is occupied.
ALOT of frustration around half court creation simply comes down to NOT forcing one defender to guard two on the weakside.
Common weakside actions:
- 45 cut
- Replace
- Hammer
- Duck in
- Flare

The Warriors did this with Steph in their most recent title run. The Nuggets did it with Murray. The Knicks did it with Brunson this year.
Unless opponents show they can beat it consistently, showing & recovering as a way to hide poor iso defenders is a button you want to press.
Jalen Brunson is a bad iso defender (F metric grade) but the Knicks put him on bad iso players + had him show & recover instead of switching onto iso players.
He switched just 10 of 64 P&Rs his man screened on that were used.
10 of the first 40, then 0 of the last 24.
@Lakers
What can we learn from the way that the Knicks built their roster? The discussion is mostly revolving around small point guards. There are other, better lessons to take away that other teams can replicate:

More Random Thoughts:
⚾️ I have received a TON of questions regarding Austin Riley and if he's droppable. Most in the space won't agree with me but for me, he's a can't drop guy. There will never be a time where I would advise to drop him. Unless you play in a really shallow league, anything 12 teams or more, he's a must hold. If he ever gets dropped in any of my leagues, I will be the first to scoop him up. Same applies for Mookie Betts. You're stuck with him IMO. Add someone and bench Riley until he gets it going. I know it's hard but please please please hold him.
⚾️Blaze Jordan could not have asked for a better start to his big league career. 4/8 with 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI. Add in deeper leagues. Still prefer Gelof as a JoRam replacement.
⚾️Who is the closer for the A's? Hogan Harris? Elvis Alvarado? My money is still on Harris but I really like what we've been seeing from Alvarado. Last 4 outings - 4.1 IP, 11 Ks, 0 ER. If I had it my way, I'd turn the whole damn thing over to him. He looks so good. If you're chasing SVs, go get him.
⚾️My boy, Jordan Lawlar, is BACK. 2 games, he's started one and sat one. I think they are probably just easing him back into action but his ceiling is so high, I think he's worth rostering.
⚾️Don't look now but Noelvi Marte is HEATING up! 4/11 with 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB. Also qualifies at 3B and OF.
⚾️Samad Taylor has looked pretty damn good over the last 6 games. 10/23 with 4 R, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 2 SB. Qualifies at 2B and OF. I'm not sure how long this lasts but worth a shot in deeper mixed leagues (12+).
⚾️Luis Garcia Jr needs to be in the lineup everyday. I feel like I've been saying that for years now. Over the last two weeks - 9/39 (.231) with 9 R, 5 HR, 14 RBI, and SLG'ing .718! KEEP HIM IN THE LINEUP EVERYDAY!
⚾️In terms of JoRam replacements - here's how I would rank some FAs -
Gelof
Lewis
Marte
Lawlar
Jordan
The ODDS of the Spurs losing the NBA Finals 4-1, when taking into account the following sequences:
- They held a double digit lead in all 5 games
- Held the lead at some point in the last 2 minutes of every game
- Blew a 29 point half time lead + 20 point 4th Q lead
Are ~1 in 250,000. Virtually impossible odds.
*This is using a high P value (early leads in some games), which actually lowered the odds.
Basketball is a simple game.
Mitch Johnson over complicated it, the entire series, in three ways:
1. Exotic coverages: Brunson can’t beat you from the mid range, much like Shai couldn’t last series. Way too many traps, matchup zones, blitzes, etc. leading to the Knicks attacking long closeouts all series long.
2. Transition to build the lead, and then walk the ball up the floor and play not to lose, with the lead. There was a clock in every single game of the series where you could see the Spurs shift from fast to slow.
3. The Kornet minutes. Mitch chose a guaranteed negative 10 minutes on a game by game basis versus getting creative with his personnel.
We’ve never a series more negatively impacted by a coaching staff than this Spurs squad in the NBA Finals. And it was all EXTREMELY predictable and preventable.
Mike Brown was INCREDIBLE. No coach more deserving of a title than him.
‼️ EMPTY BELOW THE NAIL ‼️
Slice action is really common from the low sideline. But using a DIAMOND TEMPLATE will ‘empty below the nail’ on a slice action, eliminating the help and assuring advantage.
We typically see slice SLOB’s from a 2 guard front, allowing the low man to tag or stunt at the rim.
If the defense SWITCHES this action it creates an organic flex stagger with a ton of slip/curl opportunities.
