When people talk about AI, it is easy to get the impression that Europe has completely fallen behind. Most of the biggest frontier models come from American companies. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta are setting much of the pace, while NVIDIA dominates AI accelerators. Europe does have Mistral in France, but right now it is nowhere near the same level in terms of scale, money or influence. But saying Europe has no real role in AI would still be wrong, because Europe is much stronger lower down the stack, in the physical technology that actually makes modern AI hardware possible.

The best example is ASML. ASML is a Dutch company and the only company in the world that makes EUV lithography machines at this level. These systems are used to manufacture the most advanced chips, including the kinds of chips used for modern AI workloads. So the chain looks something like this: NVIDIA designs the GPU in the United States, TSMC manufactures it in Taiwan, but TSMC needs ASML's lithography equipment to manufacture the most advanced chip layers. And even saying "ASML machine" does not tell the whole story, because the machine itself depends on other major European companies. Some of the most important optics come from ZEISS in Germany. EUV light cannot simply be handled with normal lenses, so the system uses extremely precise mirrors operating inside a vacuum. Then there is the laser system, which comes from another German company, TRUMPF. TRUMPF builds the powerful CO2 laser systems used to generate the EUV light source. Tiny droplets of tin are hit with laser pulses, turned into plasma, and that plasma produces the EUV radiation needed for the lithography process.

So in simplified form: ASML machine → ZEISS optics + TRUMPF laser technology.

Once you look at it this way, the idea that Europe is irrelevant to AI starts looking a bit ridiculous. A modern AI chip may be designed in America and manufactured in Taiwan, but some of the most difficult equipment required to manufacture it comes from Europe. That does not mean AI would literally disappear without ASML. Existing GPUs would keep running, and AI can obviously run on older chips as well. But without ASML and the wider European EUV ecosystem, producing the next generations of cutting-edge AI chips at today's scale would become much more difficult. That is a huge strategic position to have.

The funny thing is that most people only notice the software side because that is what they interact with. They see ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or whatever new model appears next. Nobody sees the lithography machine sitting inside a semiconductor fab, even though without that manufacturing equipment there is no next generation of GPUs. Europe also has other major strengths on the industrial side. Siemens is heavily involved in industrial AI, automation and digital twins, Schneider Electric is important in power and cooling infrastructure for huge AI data centres, and ABB is deeply involved in robotics and physical AI.

So Europe's problem is not that it has no technology. Its bigger problem is that it failed to build software, cloud and AI platform companies on the same scale as the United States. America is extremely strong in the part you see on the screen, while Europe is still extremely strong in the part happening inside factories. And as AI moves beyond chatbots into robotics, automated factories, digital twins, massive data centres and increasingly advanced semiconductors, that industrial base could become even more important.

So there is a certain irony when people say Europe has completely missed the AI revolution. The biggest AI companies in the world may compete to build the next model, NVIDIA may design the next GPU, and TSMC may manufacture it, but at one of the most critical points in that manufacturing chain there is still a Dutch machine using German ZEISS optics and German TRUMPF laser technology.

That part is very much European.

DeepMind was founded in Europe. The problem was that incompetent European leaders failed to support it, so it ended up being sold to Google. France has Mistral, but in its current state it simply isn’t competitive. They are trying to revive Europe’s position now, but they are late to the game, and catching up from here is going to be extremely difficult.

I wouldn’t bet much on there being a reset. Tibo can already see the comments under his own posts, so there’s no need for a petition. By Saturday, most people will have their reset anyway. I don’t think he’s going to reset everyone just for this short period. Unfortunately, that’s just how it is.

They’re not going to do a reset. Most people are getting their reset on Saturday anyway, so they’ll probably just wait for that.
What I’m hoping is that they’ve fixed the quotas, Saturday’s reset happens with the improved limits, and after that they won’t need to keep manually resetting people because it’ll last roughly as long as it did before Sol.
Although honestly, that’s probably just wishful thinking. 😄😄

@thsottiaux The weekend and the natural reset are still pretty far away. This is really disappointing. I hope you’ll at least consider doing a reset today, because unfortunately this has once again turned into one of the longest gaps between resets.

I honestly think the entire reset policy would be unnecessary if the 5x–20x plans did not literally drop to zero within a single day. It simply did not work like this in the past. Your allowance used to last at least three days, and you could actually make meaningful progress.
I do not think I am the idiot here, nor are the thousands of other people on Reddit who have already provided evidence for practically everything, only to feel like nobody is listening to them.
But that is just my opinion.
I do not really know what I am supposed to do with the fact that Astra is the best model if I can barely use it even on the Pro plan.
I understand the concept of fair use, and I also understand that serving enterprise and government customers is the priority. But even with that in mind, the Pro plan keeps losing value while the price stays exactly the same.

Okay, but at this point he really shouldn’t reset tomorrow. My natural reset is due on the 19th anyway, and I think for most people it’s coming up within the next couple of days. He shouldn’t interfere with it now, because that would just push the next reset out by another week again. At this point, that wouldn’t even be helping. Just let the normal reset cycle run its course. Everyone is so hyped about the new models again that the actual issue, the fucking limits, is getting pushed into the background. I burned through three banked resets plus one of Tibo’s resets on each account in just 3–4 days, all while trying to develop a game, and I barely made any progress toward my actual goal. That’s what they should be dealing with, not shipping another 8–10 models. They need to sort out the damn quotas, because the Pro plans are giving you less and less value for the money.
