This man, that a Malaysian company would never hire, holds over 250 patents across a variety of disciplines related to the automotive industry. And he's had that hair for a long, long time.
Value the work, not the image.
Risk management 101—every exposure should have a limit, even when you’re sure nothing could go wrong. After all, the Titanic sank and AAA mortgage bonds went to zero. I worry about the market’s (and the economy’s) unlimited appetite for exposure to the positive AI revenue story.
Alex Karp says he's learning a lot from Mao Zedong even though he doesn't agree with him
"I'm reading books on Deng Xiaoping. I'm reading books on Mao. I'm learning a lot from Mao and Deng Xiaoping. I don't agree with Mao on anything. I don't believe anyone can afford not to learn."
"If you're in a very bad situation, let's just take an obvious example, the German tech scene. The German tech scene should be the number two in the world. By any historical standard, honestly, the German tech scene was the number one in the world."
"The German tech scene is on nobody's list. The largest company in Germany by market cap I think is Siemens, and Palantir is significantly larger, even though we're obviously undervalued."
Most people think photonics is one business. It's four layers stacked on top of each other, and they have completely different economics.
Worth walking through, because it explains what $LAZR is actually built around.
Layer one is the substrate. Indium phosphide wafers, the material every high speed laser is grown on. Three companies control over 90% of global supply, and crystal yields run 20 to 25% at best, so you can't spend your way out of a shortage quickly. $AXTI sits here at 10.46% of the fund.
Layer two is epitaxy. Growing the precise crystal structures onto that wafer, done in MOCVD reactors. Almost nobody tracks this layer, and it's where the constraint has quietly moved. Aixtron makes the dominant tool and sits at 9.07%.
Layer three is the laser itself. $LITE is the largest holding at 14.64%, with Furukawa at 4.74%.
Layer four is the module, assembling all of it into a transceiver. $AAOI is here at 6.09%.
Margins tell you who has pricing power. Substrate names went from single digit gross margins to the mid 40s in a year. Laser makers expanded over 1,200 basis points.
Contract assemblers like Fabrinet have held the same 12% for ten straight quarters while revenue grew 70%. Same chain, same quarter, completely different outcomes.
The top three are the interesting part. Lumentum makes the lasers, AXT makes the substrate they're grown on, and Aixtron makes the tools that grow them. Three consecutive layers, roughly a third of the fund.
That matters because most of the upstream layer isn't US listed. You need an international broker to touch a lot of it otherwise.
It also matters right now, with Nvidia putting CPO based Spectrum-X switches into full production this month and the reported FCC ban on Chinese transceivers still unresolved. Both are worth thinking about when you consider how much transceiver and China exposure you're carrying.
Owning the InP layer that gets consumed regardless of which architecture wins, transceiver, NPO or CPO, is a different bet than owning the module.
I want more data centers.
I want more nuclear power plants.
I want more water desalination plants.
I want more high speed transport.
I want more automated warehouses.
I want more 3D printing.
I want an abundant, advanced, high trust society… no longer stifled by doomerism, neuroticism and cowardice.
I’m also struggling to make sense of the RM60m price tag for the new RTS-KTM link bridge reportedly approved not just by @anthonyloke but the Ministry of Economy @akmalnasir. Unless there’s solid data showing RTS arrivals will end up using the KTM, I would rather the money be used to develop a more efficient shuttle/stage local bus network. Please enlighten us.
Long-term government bond yields are pushing up to new highs everywhere. What sticks out like a sore thumb is Japan, where the break in the long end of the yield curve is extreme. But many other places - the US, the UK and France - don't look great either.

Saya mohon YB @fazlisalleh_ EXCO Pengangkutan Kerajaan Negeri memberi jawapan telus berhubung hala tuju pengangkutan awam Johor. 🧵👇

This app is a bubble.
Almost nobody in real life talks about or cares about stocks, the more you step outside the more you realize how disconnected the public is from the market.
Anyone on here is ahead of the game, simply caring about finance puts you ahead of most people.
