Trust me ESPN, if I’m watching South Alabama-Marshall on a Tuesday night, you don’t need to promote this Saturday’s games for me. I know that they’re happening.
The Steelers used a "Pony" package on Sunday vs Tampa Bay with RBs Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle on the field together. They ran four plays from it and gained 31 yards (7.8 ypp). It's a small sample size, but the package has big potential moving forward.
Here's a breakdown:
Chris Godwin on his limited role in Bucs’ 1-5 start: “It’s definitely been interesting, different than anything I’ve been through in my career … I’m trying to stick to the process and make sure I’m where I need to be.”
Two things can be true:
1) Shanahan has historically been too conservative in 4th down situations
2) Analytics twitter is overconfident in their win probability estimates
REPORTING UNCERTAINTY MATTERS https://t.co/ZRhXaTSMgh
McCarthy got absolutely eviscerated by virtually everyone. There is also a question as to whether Rodgers audibled out of a run play on third down. What more criticism is warranted? Is the point that he should now be fired? Feels like a strawman. #Steelers
It's incredible what a free pass Mike McCarthy is getting from a lot of Steelers fans. If Tomlin butchered the end of the 4th quarter like that the pitchforks and torches would be out.
McCarthy's offense is...
17th in scoring
21st in total O
18th in passing
20th in rushing
Is that good?
But he's 4-2! Tomlin was 4-2 last year!!!!
Saw the clip where Travis Hunter explains how he “fake stumbles” when undercutting a route to trick QBs into throwing the ball - he says he intentionally squats low and leans over looking off center to make it seem like he tripped or got caught slipping on a route.
Went back and realize he did it to CJ Stroud on the EndZone interception and Stroud realizes what happened immediately.
OK I’ll weigh in because there’s a few different arguments here.
If you know the true odds, it doesn't matter if you have one chance or 1,000. And the idea that it does is foolish.
But in football we don’t know the true odds. So, a more charitable interpretation...
Sources: Maryland coach Mike Locksley has been dismissed. Maryland dropped to 2-5 on Saturday after a last-second loss to Rutgers. Locksley is 39-54 overall at Maryland, including his interim stint in 2015. Maryland is on a bye this week.
#Titans HC Robert Saleh says Jordan Elliott having a gun was, in a way, a “small sign of a cry for help,” considering he had no prior issues and is a father and a hard worker.
Saleh referenced two suicides in the NFL over the past year and expressed concern about players struggling without getting the help they need.
“These kids go through a lot. I will stand on the table for Jordan’s character. My message to 31 other teams: If you need a hell of a run-stopping DT that can help for a playoff run, give me a call. I'll tell you everything you need to know about him. He’s a good man. Had a terrible lapse in judgment.”
@Timo_NFL Silly example. Also, I’d want to see what percentage of plays players get a significant/multi-week injury vs the value of a win & the impact on a potential playoff spot/wild card/home field etc.
EXACTLY the right way to think about these decisions. Anything inside 45-55% (40-60% even?) should essentially be considered a toss-up. Teams aren’t running a sample size of 1,000 to take advantage of the smallest edges. It’s a one-shot deal.
Kyle Shanahan says a 51% analytics recommendation won’t convince him to go for it because he gets one shot, not an hour at a blackjack table
“I don’t want to hear about it if it’s 51% of the time we should go for it.”
“As I always say, I’m not sitting here playing Blackjack for an hour with no one else at the table, and eventually I’ll get 51% of it. Like, I have this one try, and I have a feel for it. I’ve been doing it too long.”
“But what I want to know from him, when it’s not a feel, when it, no, this is 98%. We don’t even need to talk about it. So we don’t need to talk about it. Tell me when it’s that, and I’ll just do it.”
@Timo_NFL When you are trying to break down analytics why would you possibly drop in “one could almost argue he hates his players.” Such a ridiculous comment that takes so much away from the rest of the point(s) you’re trying to make.
