Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla held an interaction with a delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by its Chair, Mr. David McAllister.

He underscored the shared democratic values, pluralism and diversity underpinning India–EU relations, emphasising the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties.

The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, clean energy, security and defence, as well as expanding parliamentary exchanges and people-to-people engagement.

Shri Om Birla also spoke about initiatives undertaken by the Indian Parliament to promote transparency, accessibility and the people-centric, responsible and accountable use of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met a European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee delegation led by Chair David McAllister in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Today, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Development committees and its Subcommittee on Human Rights will shortlist candidates for this year’s Sakharov Prize. Among the nominees is Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, nominated by the EPP Group.

"Tundu Lissu has been at the forefront of the struggle for electoral reform, political fairness and the restoration of democracy in Tanzania. Despite relentless persecution, he has remained steadfast in his fight. His nomination sends a powerful message of solidarity with democracy defenders around the world and reaffirms our support for their courage and determination," says @ReinholdLopatka MEP, who spearheaded his nomination.
