Oggi Pedro Sánchez ha espresso solidarietà a Giorgia Meloni.

Lo ha fatto davanti alle telecamere, a fine Consiglio europeo, e in privato, guardandola in faccia.

"Le ho espresso la mia solidarietà, anche in privato, di fronte a questo attacco che non è né politico né personale e che sinceramente non so neanche come qualificare". E lo ha fatto a poche ore di distanza da quando, sempre a Bruxelles, la stessa Meloni aveva accusato la Spagna di aver regolarizzato mezzo milione di cittadini stranieri.

E allora vale la pena ricordare cosa ha fatto lei, in tutti questi mesi, per lui.

Quando Trump, appena insediato, ha liquidato la Spagna come una "nazione BRICS" e ha minacciato di colpirla con dazi al cento per cento, Meloni se ne stava a Mar-a-Lago a farsi celebrare come la sua alleata più fidata in Europa.

Quando Trump, al vertice NATO dell'Aja, ha minacciato Sánchez perché si fermava al 2,1 per cento di spese militari, gridando "è terribile" e promettendo di fargli pagare il doppio sui dazi, Meloni applaudiva il target del cinque per cento e lo chiamava "necessario e sostenibile", arrivando a negare (mentendo) che la Spagna avesse rifiutato l'imposizione.

Quando Trump, in mondovisione, è arrivato a dire che la Spagna "forse dovrebbe essere espulsa dalla NATO", una cosa mai sentita, una minaccia aperta a un Paese alleato, da Palazzo Chigi è sceso un silenzio assoluto.

E quando, ad aprile, il Pentagono ha persino valutato di sospendere la Spagna dall'Alleanza atlantica, perché Sánchez si era rifiutato di prestare le sue basi per bombardare l'Iran, Meloni, ancora una volta, si è girata dall'altra parte.

Un anno e mezzo. Un anno e mezzo di insulti, minacce di dazi e di espulsione contro un leader europeo. Un anno e mezzo in cui Giorgia Meloni ha trovato il tempo di andare a Domenica In a commuoversi sulle pastarelle della domenica con i nonni, ma per Pedro Sánchez, preso a sportellate settimana dopo settimana, mai una parola. Una sola.

Poi è arrivato oggi. Oggi Trump si è voltato e ha colpito lei. E nel giro di poche ore, il primo a difenderla in pubblico e in privato, è arrivato proprio lui, Pedro Sánchez.

As someone who knows both worlds equally well and has had good experiences in both, here is my experience:

Americans should be grateful for higher salaries, even though that is not always true in reality, but pretending that this automatically means an easier life is absurd. A larger paycheck means less when healthcare, childcare, university, insurance, transport and housing can consume it before the month is over. In much of Europe, the average worker earns less on paper but has far more security around that income. One illness, one job loss or one family emergency is less likely to become a financial death sentence.

The wealth gap is also narrower, the social floor is higher and basic services are not designed primarily to extract maximum profit from people who have no alternative. Americans are paid more because they are forced to privately purchase things Europeans already fund collectively. That is not greater freedom. It is a more expensive and more fragile way to live.

America offers exceptional opportunities for the wealthy and highly paid. For millions of ordinary workers, it offers longer hours, weaker protections, higher personal risk and the constant threat that one bad year can erase everything. Europe is not richer in terms of gross salaries. It is richer in stability, time, public infrastructure and the ability to live without every basic human need being turned into a bill.

This quality of life is increasingly dismissed as “communism” by American billionaires, even though it rests on basic human rights and the foundations of modern civilisation. The bitter irony is that this same ignorance is helping push the United States closer to an authoritarian state. The most pathetic part is watching people with no wealth, no power and no safety net repeat the talking points of billionaires as if they belonged to the same class, while defending a system that would bankrupt them long before it ever inconvenienced the people they worship.

Yo en mi caso tuve la suerte de que mis padres y mis suegros pusieron suficiente como para cubrir todo. Yo hubiera sido feliz haciendo negativo pero los regalos son siempre bienvenidos.
