Important reminder to anomalists everywhere - inspired a few years ago by some conversations while hanging out with @RadioMisterioso host, Greg Bishop.
The Magic Bag — Mark Probert — 1963 — Signed 1968
An unusual piece from the earliest years of UFO and flying saucer history.
Mark Probert was a San Diego trance medium whose alleged communications with his “Inner Circle” became closely connected with Meade Layne and the Borderland Sciences Research Associates. Beginning in the 1940s, Layne used information attributed to Probert's communicators in developing his early “Ether Ship” interpretation of flying saucers.
The Magic Bag was published by the Inner Circle Kethra E'Da Foundation in San Diego in 1963. Probert stated that the material began being dictated to him in 1947 and took roughly five years to complete.
It is personally inscribed:
“To Bill & Rosemarie
In Friendship
Mark Probert
Aug 23rd 1968”
Probert died in February 1969, making this a late-life signed copy.
A fascinating piece connecting spiritualism, trance mediumship and some of the earliest attempts to explain the modern UFO phenomenon.

I recently joined my friend Ken Eakins on @SittingNow for a conversation on the evolving cultural, historical, and geopolitical framing around UAPs/UFOs.

@RareUFOVault@memizon Jacques Vallee - 'A Descriptive Study of the Entities Associated with Type 1 Sightings,' Flying Saucer Review - Vol. 10, N. 1: Jan-Feb 1964
@memizon@RareUFOVault Benson could have mentioned Jim and Coral Lorenzen/APRO, along with Flying Saucer Review - which would prove his point, and Vallee published in FSR in the early 60’s on entity encounters, which would make Vallee’s own published material contradict himself.
Y'all need to be reading the latest brilliant piece from David Metcalfe, on the myth of the simple witness: https://t.co/45aDkwHvjU
"By treating the witness as a co-analyst, anomaly research moves away from paternalistic technocracy and toward participatory science."
“In those days I got hundreds of reports monthly - too many to publish from an aroused public. Today, it’s just apathy.” A note that crash/retrieval researcher Leonard Stringfield wrote in the mid 1980s, in reference to his pioneering 1950s research period that produced CRIFO and Saucer Post 3-0 Blue.
How do we responsibly study the unknown?
Volume 3, Issue 1 of Limina: The Journal of UAP Studies explores that question through contributions from scholars in philosophy, physics, psychology, law, political theory, and the humanities.
Centered on the theme "Boundary Conditions: Evidence, Experience, and Method in UAP Studies," this issue advances the conceptual, scientific, and methodological foundations of the emerging field of UAP Studies.

"I’ve found that the most incisive fieldwork is done right where you are ... Seeing what’s around you with fresh eyes and actually exploring just how strange the familiar really is."
"UFOs and Demons"--another fantastic piece by @davidbmetcalfe

The brilliant @davidbmetcalfe is riled up over the state of ufology! -- another brilliant piece:

Interesting to see we are at a cultural moment that includes Day After Scenario planning from academics and professionals for the possible reaction to the discovery or revelation of heretofore acknowledged non-human intelligence.
uNHIdden launches Preparedness Plan - a public health approach to disclosure
Today uNHIdden publishes Preparing for Disclosure ‒ the first public health preparedness framework for paradigm-shifting discoveries.
Governments prepare for pandemics, natural disasters and industrial incidents.
Almost nobody is preparing for the human consequences of a discovery that fundamentally changes how people understand themselves and their place in the universe.
Whatever is disclosed, people matter.

Frank Scully’s personal “Behind the Flying Saucers” scrapbook from the 50s. I’ve been researching the Aztec case for eons. I’m conflicted about what to do with some of this information.
1950 Gold Metal paperback of Keyhoe’s book on the left, 1954 issue of Moseley’s “NEXUS” zine on the right. This style of machine seems to have majorly evaporated from the saucerian milieu after the 50s.

Symposium booklet from the 1978 MUFON conference where Stringfield did his crash/retrieval presentation that changed everything. What’s particularly interesting about this is that he was originally slotted to do material surrounding his book “Situation Red” that had just been published the year prior. Material surrounding UFO case stories - especially those from the recent humanoid flap in 1973. He pivoted last minute and put together a presentation on crash/retrievals, which at the time was an almost entirely ignored topic due to the fallout from hoaxes and c/r stories like Aztec from decades prior. He spent a couple months before the symposium in July making a new presentation. The only people that knew about his new presentation were Walter Andrus (Director of MUFON at the time), and the printers of the booklets. He was very secretive about it for various reasons, and there are strange details about what happened at the presentation, involving J. Allen Hynek and others. I’m excited to finish my zine issue on Stringfield and share more of this story, as it genuinely shifted the entire UFO discussion.
The scientific search for technosignatures is accelerating.
This upcoming online symposium explores theory, observation, and data analysis approaches using current and future space missions.
