The financial results show how Carrick OVERACHIEVED to get United to third place last season. Their wage bill for 2025-26 is already lower than that posted by Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the year before. City’s wage bill for 2024-25 was £168m more than United’s was for last season.

Those clubs are also now either outstripping or competing with United for revenues, unthinkable a decade ago. In 2025, City hit £694m and Arsenal reached £691m.

There's been plenty of talk around Manchester United's physical metrics this season.

Is it just noise? Or cause for concern?

The answer is likely somewhere in the middle. United rank 20th in total distance covered per 90, but there is no correlation to more running = more wins.

Their pressing structure does seem to lack clarity however, with their pressure totals per 30 minutes out of possession ranking 19th/20 (indicating mid and low blocks), but their final third pressures ranking 4th/20.

In terms of squad profiles, there seems to be two distinct types of players. Looking at our Athleticism Score, which benchmarks physical output against position peers and converts it to a 0-100 percentile, United have 6 players with good scores, but there is a steep drop off after that. Their minutes weighted Athleticism Score of 44.4 ranks 17th out of 20.
