Dear firstborns, carry this truth gently but firmly in your hearts: as you step into the role of the deputy parent, do not forget yourself. From an early age, responsibility finds you without asking for permission. You become the buffer, the fixer, the one who steps in when parents are tired, absent, or overwhelmed. You give not because you are asked, but because you understand what would happen if you did not.

You sacrifice quietly. You delay your own dreams so school fees can be paid, rent can be covered, crises can be managed, and younger siblings can be shielded from the weight of reality. You convince yourself that one day it will be seen, understood, and appreciated. You believe that blood, shared history, and shared struggle will naturally translate into loyalty and gratitude.

But life teaches firstborns a painful lesson early: when your siblings finally stabilize and learn to fly on their own, many will not look back. Not out of cruelty, but out of comfort. Survival hardens memory. What once felt like sacrifice to you becomes “normal” to them. And when the day comes that you are tired, stretched, or in need, some will say—sometimes gently, sometimes coldly—that they never asked you to help.

This is not theory. This is lived experience. Same mother. Same father. Same blood. Same home. Yet when the seasons changed, the burden remained on one shoulder. The help you gave did not return in equal measure. The loyalty you assumed would be permanent turned out to be conditional on convenience.

This is the quiet loneliness of the firstborn. You are strong for everyone else, but expected to be strong even when you are breaking. You are the reference point, yet you have no one to reference when you fall. Family assumes you will always “figure it out,” because you always have.

That is why many firstborns eventually learn a hard but freeing truth: you cannot anchor your life on human appreciation. It will disappoint you. You cannot build your strength on family loyalty alone. It will waver. If your sense of worth depends on being needed, you will be used until there is nothing left.

For many firstborns, there comes a moment of surrender—not to bitterness, but to clarity. You realize that when everyone else has somewhere to run, you often have no one but Jesus. No safety net. No applause. Just faith. And strangely, that is where healing begins.

Jesus becomes the only witness to your sacrifices, the only one who understands the nights you stayed awake worrying, the decisions you made in silence, the strength you borrowed just to survive another day. Where people minimize your pain, He validates it. Where family forgets, He remembers. Where human support fails, His presence remains.

So firstborn, do not lose yourself trying to save everyone else. Give, but do not bleed dry. Help, but do not disappear. Love, but do not abandon your own future. And when the weight becomes too heavy, remember this: even if no one else sees you, even if no one else stands with you, Jesus does. And in the end, His support is the one that does not shift with seasons, success, or convenience.
