This convening comes at a critical moment.
With only four years left to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals, the question before us is no longer whether data matters. It is whether countries can finance, govern, protect, and use data systems at the scale required to deliver for people.
In my remarks, I pointed to three priorities that must guide this work.
𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮. National data systems remain underfunded, even though every serious development decision depends on trusted, timely, and usable data.
𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. No country can build the data and space infrastructure required for the age of intelligence on its own. Governments, the private sector, academia, civil society, development partners, and local communities must work together.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 that can secure data and digital sovereignty, while using data, digital infrastructure, and space technologies to deliver the Global Goals.

Data has become crucial for better agriculture, climate adaptation, disaster risk management, land use management, environmental monitoring and an array of other important sectors.
Into the future, development will increasingly depend on production of accurate locally relevant data, and the use of that data to make better decisions, to finance the right priorities and to tackle the most pressing local and global needs.
Kenya and Africa must invest in capabilities for generation of its own data and limit consuming intelligence from externally produced data that is often insensitive to local realities.
Quality data helps to plan development interventions directed at service delivery points: at the heath centre where medicine is dispensed, at the school where teachers and equipment converge to support education, or at the road construction site where a road is being built to connect farmers and traders to markets.
To avoid data dependency, Kenya and Africa ought to develop innovative ways of financing national data systems as part of core national infrastructure and align development partner support to country-owned systems.
Opened the Global Data Festival and the Kenya Space Expo and Conference, Nairobi.
More than 1000 delegates from 65 Countries attending.
Governments, International Institutions, Civil Society, Academia, Data Organizations and practitioners represented.

Day 1 highlights:
- Kenya's young population must be facilitated to participate in conversations about data and innovation.
- Data gives visibility to the invisible, resulting in interventions that ensure inclusivity of everyone in the society. @SafaricomPLC@googlekenya
Day 1 highlights:
- Data must be seen as necessary infrastructure akin to Transport. To support development, investment in data is necessary.
