My 17-year-old son was in a horrific accident on Monday. He was ejected from the vehicle, and we have been at Hamilton General ever since.

He has a fractured neck, a broken shoulder, broken ribs, broken elbow, broken collar bone and multiple other injuries.

And yet, since yesterday afternoon, my injured 17-year-old child has been left in a hospital hallway, under the brightest lights, with no privacy, no proper place to rest, and very little relief.

I understand our hospitals are overwhelmed. I understand our healthcare workers are stretched beyond their limits. This is not an attack on the nurses and doctors who are doing everything they can.

This is about a system that is failing both its patients AND its healthcare workers.

How have we gotten to the point where a child with a fractured neck and multiple traumatic injuries is left lying in a hallway?

And I don’t even want to make this about me, because I would sit beside my son on the floor for the rest of my life if that’s what he needed. But one week ago today, I finished 38 rounds of chemo. I’ve now spent days sitting in a hard chair beside him, running on fear, adrenaline and exhaustion, with no relief in sight.

Something has to change.

We work. We pay taxes. We pay into benefits. We do everything we’re supposed to do — and when our families desperately need help, where is it?

This isn’t acceptable healthcare.

This isn’t compassion.

And this isn’t something we should just learn to tolerate because “there aren’t enough beds.”

There aren’t enough beds. There aren’t enough resources. There aren’t enough supports. And our families and healthcare workers are paying the price.

We need change. We need accountability. And we need it NOW.

Because no parent should have to watch their seriously injured child recover in a hospital hallway.

On August 1st, police say he pushed a woman up against a bus stop window and shoved his hands down her pants.

That same day, another woman says he crept up BEHIND her on the sidewalk, yanked her pants down, and ran when she fought him off.

Se*ual battery. Indecent exposure. Arrested.

...and released.

On August 6th, near Scissortail Park, police say he walked up behind ANOTHER woman and grabbed her body over and over, then started digging in his pants. Arrested again.

...and released, again.

On August 12th on a walking trail, police say he came up BEHIND a woman jogging, pulled her to the ground, and tried to R*PE her right there in the open, in broad daylight.

He almost did it. You know who stopped him? Not a judge. Not a bond. FIREFIGHTERS. They were there, they saw it, they pulled him off her and called police.

If those firefighters had been anywhere else that day... that woman gets r*ped on a public trail in the middle of the afternoon.

Every single time, he attacked from behind. Every single time, he hunted a woman alone...and TWO separate times, our justice system caught him... and let him walk right back out to do it again.

He has 20+ arrests since 2022...

An Alberta family is taking the province to court after paying nearly $200,000 out of pocket for spinal surgery in the United States, arguing years-long healthcare delays violated their daughter’s constitutional rights.

Vienna Pedatella was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis at age 13 and waited more than two years for surgery in Alberta, well beyond the recommended six-month timeline for pediatric spinal surgery, as her spinal curvature continued to worsen despite following her doctors’ recommended bracing and physical therapy.

The family applied to Alberta’s Out-of-Country Health Services Program, designed to fund care unavailable in Canada due to excessive wait times, after finding a surgeon in New Jersey who could operate within weeks. When their application and subsequent appeal were both rejected, with a review committee determining Vienna could have continued waiting in Alberta, the family paid for the surgery themselves in August 2025.

With support from the Canadian Constitution Foundation, the family has now filed a judicial review asking the court to overturn the decision and force the government to reimburse the surgery costs.
