Thought of the morning…
Do what you need to do BEFORE you do what you want to do.
Example: You have a scheduled run tomorrow morning but you slept in, you worked, it got hot, you spent time on social media, you napped, you made plans with your friends… and that run never happens. I’ll be the first to admit it is not the end of the world and won’t make a bit of difference to most people’s lives BUT that habit, the skill, the personality trait of making sure what you should do happens regardless of feeling is something that needs to be practiced and mastered. That skill will take you much further in many aspects of your life than the run would have. It’s not about the run. The run is not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. It’s the habit of doing what you need to do before doing what you want to do, that’s the secret to success.

Performance > Grind
Winning > Hard Work

Help me congratulate my son Niko for wrapping up his high school era! 🎉 I'm proud to be his dad and grateful to God everyday for him. I love you Cook and we're excited to cheer your accomplishments and to support you during the not so great times. Glorify Jesus in all you do and I'll leave you with this bit of wisdom my Granny Corriz gave me when I graduated, "Stay out of trouble and don't go to prison." 😂
If I were an AD, I’d create a 1 week minimum no practice policy for athletes that finish a season before they can start another sport. 1 week should not put any team or athlete “behind” and should not affect playing time, starting lineups… etc especially for sports that don’t officially start for months!
Athlete of the Year. The ultimate culmination of a high school athletic career and we couldn't be more proud of you Niko. Nobody saw the early morning workouts and all the times you were putting in work with me or your brothers. Doing speed workouts on your own in the heat and in the cold. You put the extra work in before and after practices. You took your role as a leader and a role model seriously and always represented Capital and the programs you played for with class and pride. It's not easy being a coach's son but you never allowed outside perceptions define you, choosing instead to respond through hard work, discipline, and performance. People can say what they want but God blessed you with this honor because you did things the right way. I love you Cook.
HS Coaches: if you’re not playing an active role in the development of your MS programs, then you’re handicapping future success.
At the bare minimum, take an interest.
Recognition is Recruiting.
The average high school head football coach stipend is around $7,000. Fluctuating heavily
For that, they’re expected to coach year-round, run a program, mentor kids, manage parents, recruit their own halls, fundraise, break down film, coordinate staffs, and be available almost 24/7.
Football coaches are grossly underpaid for what we ask of them.
If 95% of your teammates are showing growth and development, and you’re not… don’t come complain to me.
You won’t like that conversation.
You get what you put into the weight room every single day. You can’t hide from the process. You can’t cheat the weight room.
Eventually, it will expose you!
I am getting really tired of out-of-season coaches and clubs pressuring student athletes to participate in weekday practices or weekend tournaments while they are competing in in-season sports.
Let kids compete and be all-in during their season.
“To maximize gains from long-term practice, individuals must avoid exhaustion and must limit practice to an amount from which they can completely recover on a daily or weekly basis.” ~K. Anders Ericsson

Answered this question today.
If we need a lactate workout and weather will force us indoors, what do we do?
❓❓❓
Can we do stuff in gym?
YES
Do this x4 with 3 min rest. (4 min if needed)
Down and back 3x (court is 84’ long… down and back would be 168’, 3 down and backs would be a total of 504’ =153m).
This is basically 4x 150m with 6 accelerations and 6 decelerations built into each. That’s 48 accelerations & decelerations!
Full speed, performance level work.
Call out times. Have athletes report their times during rest periods.
Record, Rank, Publish.
It’s ironic that coaches are afraid to practice at performance level.
Why?
They are afraid of injuries.
Why do they experience high injury rates?
Because their athletes are not exposed to performance level work. 🤔
When you understand that low-dose, performance-level work creates a joyful experience in practice that improves the MENTAL HEALTH of athletes, it’s a game-changer. ⚡️⚡️⚡️
No lie here. High school head coaches should make 30k a year. OC & DC should make 18k a year & position coaches should make 10k a year. Each school should have 125k budget 4 football coaches. It’s a lot of work & it’s a year round job. Coaches making 1,500 a year is insane‼️
“To maximize gains from long-term practice,” the study’s lead author, K. Anders Ericsson, concluded, “individuals must avoid exhaustion and must limit practice to an amount from which they can completely recover on a daily or weekly basis.”

My girlfriend laughs at me and says it never happened. Am I the only one who remembers when Pizza Hut was a fancy sit-down restaurant? You had a waitress, red tablecloths, those red bumpy cups, a salad bar, and a jukebox. It was an event!
Handed out our summer schedule for 2026. Here’s what in it:
7 Practices
75 Minutes/Practice
June: 3
July: 4
4 Scrimmages
June: 1
July: 3
Lift Schedule
Tues: Sprint/Squat
Wed: COD/Bench
Thur: Sprint/Clean
90 Mins/Day
All Fridays: OFF
All Saturdays: OFF (Minus 1 in June for Colts 11on11)
All Mondays: OFF (Last 5 Mondays of summer are moratorium days)
✅Guaranteed 4 day weekend for kids to have a summer
➡️Days with practice, kids are here from 3:30pm-6:30pm
➡️Days without practice, kids are here from 8:30am-10:00am
➡️Scrimmages all kids get reps, our younger players tend to get more than varsity returners for development
Multiple kids have already come up to let me know they won’t be at certain days for other things. My response: “Thanks for letting me know, reminder though summer is not mandatory and don’t let a coach tell you it is, it’s here to benefit the program. Show up when you can.”
‼️Reminder: NO PART OF THE SUMMER IS A SPECIFIC SPORTS MONTH AND NO PART OF SUMMER IS MANDATORY. The more you do is not better. Less is a better approach. Be fast and be efficient. Be mindful of the kids time because they just spent 182 days at the school.
Since moving to this type of summer: Our program is 37-12. Yes we’ve had some great talent come through, but our players are happy and healthy through the seasons and buy into our process of why we do what we do.
For our football program, we do not touch a football from our last snap of the season until summer time. Strictly weight room/Sprint emphasis.
✅Happy & healthy kids in your program = RESULTS.
