ETF redemption (a process which reduces the overall outstanding units of the ETF) is a process in which Authorized Participants engage in order to acquire synthetic units of certain underlying securities contained within the ETF without the necessity to borrow such securities directly.

This is a key part of the extended ETF liquidity mechanism. $XRT is often used as an instrument for strategic Fails-to-Deliver on $GME. It has just hit an unprecedented level of redemption (down to 1mil units) indicating that the fund is over 2000% short as a result. This has never happened.
