No, SXSW isn’t getting rod of music. But the Austin festival is paring back its 2026 schedule, following reduced sales and last year’s boycott due to ties to the military-industrial complex. https://t.co/rAEMhvSQH7
@notthegiraffe@bfurnas Yes, but bc of AMI unless you build in areas where the rent is higher than the city average, it’s only going to push rents higher citywide. As the other guy’s graphic shows, we’re at the a vacancy rate the same as 2017 but rents are 50% higher. That is the reason.
@DukeandDukeCB@bfurnas Ah yes, the famous retort about public housing, which only became a “money pit” once the feds switched to privately subsidized methods (like 421a, vouchers, section 8) which - coincidentally - is also when rents started spiking higher than the normal 2% rate of inflation
@bfurnas “Just build more housing and costs will come down” they say.
But the 80/20 421a split has caused AMI rents to soar across the city, locking most families out of eligibility for both market rate and affordable units.
+ rent concessions still means leases signed at gross rate.
@bfurnas She’s absolutely right, all the constraint is below-market rate units. There is no plan that addresses this very simple mathematical equation. A 421a that’s mandatory 80% affordable might do it, but with AMI’s it’s all a scam anyway. Public housing is the only true answer.
BREAKING: Austin Parks and Rec Board unanimously passes a recommendation that @SXSW be required to pay fair rates to musicians. This is a massive victory and a huge step.
also, greg is partnering w/ @kickstarter to crowdfund the construction of a new recording studio, and a tangible testament to music's endurance ~

- Eliminating work requirements for SNAP &other assistance
- Humanitarian provisions in prisons & decarceral policies
