Looking at the thermal tolerance of juvenile crown-of-thorns sea stars in context with heatwaves that bleach and kill corals!
Australia makes a BIG decision for endangered and CITES-listed black teatfish (Holothuria whitmaei). Harvest and export from the Great Barrier Reef not permitted! A rare movement to protect at-risk invertebrates on our coral reefs #seacucumber#fishery#conservation#proud

I knew #COTS is well-known enemy of #coralreefs but never knew how the juveniles fare in comparison to their adults.Blimey, they are super resilient to change in diets & robust in growth. Well done @DeakerDione, absolutely enjoyed your talk! @SydneySOLES@ProfMariaByrne#amsa21
Small crown-of thorns-starfish juveniles can be injured and killed by coral stinging cells. This is the one opportunity for corals to fight back against these coral eating starfish, although the tough juveniles can regrow their lost arms.

The gut microbiome is considered to be important to many biological functions in animals, but what happens to the microbiome when the gut is lost or becomes non-functional?
We explore this using the transition from feeding (L) to nonfeeding (R) in the sea urchin Heliocidaris.

Did you know @Aus_ScienceWeek characters are based on real life scientists? @ProfMariaByrne is a marine biologist who followed her passion for exploring the underwater world and applies her knowledge of sea stars to find better ways to manage crown-of-thorns starfish #WomenInSTEM
Crown of Thorns juveniles are very tough and resourceful, even when they are just millimetres in size. Very proud of my little starfish for helping us figure out what makes this species so successful
What do baby crown-of-thorns starfish eat? ✴️🌊
New research shows they have a highly varied died, including bacteria. This matters for reef conservation efforts.

East Australian estuaries are warming very quickly our study finds. You might have seen the story on ABC news tonight, here’s the full paper. @Sydney_Science#climatechange#marinebiolgy#climate https://t.co/YEAT9CZrke
Was excited to be asked for my thoughts about this cool new paper by @DeakerDione and @ProfMariaByrne. Great stuff as always! https://t.co/xaTQ8YM9en #COTS#starfish
