6 June 1868. Robert Falcon Scott was born in Plymouth. On the Terra Nova expedition he led a party of 5 who reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912 less than 5 weeks after Amundsen’s South Pole expedition but they all died on the return journey.
Today we remember the sacrifice and bravery of the British and Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy 82 years ago.
They fought for freedom, duty, and our values.
We will never forget their sacrifice.
6 June 1944. American troops wade ashore on Utah Beach. The 23,250 troops met with the least resistance of the 5 landing sites. They were assisted by the US 101st Airborne Division and advanced quickly off the beach.
