Are you interested in how chemistry transitions to biology — the origins-of-life problem?
We have some recent work on this problem and we are excited by the possibilities. From an aqueous mixture of three salts and formaldehyde we get protocells. More about the work are in the thread below ⬇️
We are looking for creative scientists with skilful hands and analytical minds to continue the work.
Are you a chemist with analytical (particularly NMR and/or Mass Spectrometry) skills in exploring the biomolecular diversity this system is producing — amino acids, peptides, lipids and more?
Are you a materials scientist/experimental physicist interested in understanding the self assembly and self organisation mechanisms of this system?
Please reach out if you think you are well suited for this — [email protected] with your CV and a short write up about why this interests you.
When a cell divides, its centrosome splits in two—and cell division can go catastrophically wrong if the two centrosomes grow to different sizes. How does the cell regulate centrosome size? @DebSBanerjee1 and PoLS faculty @ShilaBanerji present a novel model in a new @eLife paper!

Single cells can learn without a nervous system, but how? In our new preprint, Deepa Rajan and I describe a simple model for habituation in Stentor cells, based on mechanoreceptor internalization and recycling, and test it with quantitative experiments.

Our postdoc, Gabrielle, received an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology (PRFB) to support her research on microbial life in extreme conditions in the next three years in our lab. Congratulations!!
Two Research Assistant (RA) positions are available in our Soft, Living & Intelligent Matter Group @RRI_Bangalore.
The position is for 1 year and may be extended up to a maximum of 2 years.

Very happy to share the first article from my postdoc work in the Tomancak lab! https://t.co/0gmwblw1Wb. We studied the self-organization of actin in aggregates made from Hydra cells. Thread below (1/9)
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”
I am very excited to start as a faculty member at the Soft Condensed Matter Group at @RRI_Bangalore. We will be working on active matter, glasses, non-eq self-assembly, application of AI in soft matter and in many other interesting areas.
The third annual South Side Science Festival is happening tomorrow @UChicago ! If you're around, come check out our fun hands-on rheology demo in the Center for Living Systems area.
Very happy to share new work by Cal (w Aaron and @murugan_chicago ) https://t.co/nmsyJqQOk8 ! We show how the expressivity/computational ability of non-equilibrium biological processes may expected to be fundamentally limited.
📢 Applications for ELBE postdoc fellowships are open! If you're up for a biophysics theory-experiment collaboration in the Dresden environment, please apply! @csbdresden, @mpi_pks, @mpicbg, @tudresden_de
