@ChildrensFndn A5: Parents and teachers can validate and normalize that this transition is challenging for all. Because most of us are are having our own unique experiences with the pandemic, all parties need to be patient with themselves and with others. (2/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A5: Communication between teachers, school staff, parents, and students is vital to develop individualized transition plans for those that need them. Regular check-ins would also be helpful. Referrals for mental health services may be appropriate. (1/2) MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A4: It is likely that many youth will continue to experience depression and anxiety. Some will develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, either directly as a result of the pandemic or indirectly, such as experiencing increased abuse or neglect at home. (2/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A4: Some students may have fallen behind their peers in specific classes, or they may need to repeat a class or a grade level. Others may be lacking in social skills because they didn’t have the opportunity to practice them during the past year. (1/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A3: Ensure communication (emails, surveys) with both parents and students so that each student’s individual needs are being met (ie. camera on or off, asynchronous vs. synchronous learning). Regular check-ins would also be helpful. (2/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A3: Provide devices for any students that need them. (Some districts may need government assistance.) Also, ensure that all students have internet availability. Provide alternative options, if needed, such as the ability to use the school’s internet. (1/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A2: As youth return to school, some may feel relief at the “return to normalcy” and time with friends. However, worries may include: Being behind in their classes, experiencing bullying again or contracting covid-19 (or transmitting it to a family member). (2/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A2: While some youth are thriving at home, many are experiencing decreased motivation, increased isolation, anxiety, and depression. Nationwide, we’ve seen an increase in suicidal thoughts and attempts among youth. (1/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A1: Virtual school is not a good fit for others, such as students with special needs or those that need the structure that school provides. Building relationships among students and teachers is also challenging virtually. (2/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
@ChildrensFndn A1 Some students have been successful in the online environment, potentially due to less distractions at home or an increased comfort level in the home environment. (1/2) #MIVirtualEdChat
