🥬 THE KIMCHI BACTERIA THAT COULD HELP YOUR BODY FIGHT INVISIBLE PLASTIC

Every day, tiny plastic particles may enter our bodies through the food we eat, the water we drink, and the environment around us. Some of these particles are so small that they are measured in nanometers. But scientists may have discovered an unexpected ally against them, hidden inside a traditional Korean fermented food: kimchi.

Researchers from the World Institute of Kimchi identified a strain of beneficial bacteria called Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656. What makes this bacterium interesting is its ability to attach itself to microscopic plastic particles inside the digestive system, potentially helping the body remove them through waste.

In laboratory experiments designed to simulate conditions in the human intestine, this bacterial strain bound to approximately 57% of polystyrene nanoplastics. Researchers also tested it in germ-free mice, where the probiotic increased the amount of tiny plastic particles excreted in feces by more than two times compared with the control group.

But the discovery raises an even bigger question: Could certain beneficial bacteria help prevent some plastic particles from remaining inside our bodies?

Nanoplastics are extremely small, and scientists are investigating their ability to cross biological barriers and reach different organs. However, the actual health effects of exposure in humans, along with the body’s ability to remove these particles, are still being studied.

The researchers’ findings suggest that food-derived bacteria may have potential as a biological tool for capturing and removing certain types of plastic particles. Rather than breaking the plastic down, the bacteria appear to bind to it, creating a possible pathway for elimination through the digestive system.

There is an important limitation: This study does not prove that eating kimchi removes plastic from the human body or prevents plastic-related diseases. Human clinical trials are still needed to determine whether consuming this specific bacterial strain through fermented foods produces the same results.

A tiny microorganism from a traditional food has opened an intriguing new direction in research. As plastic pollution becomes an increasing environmental concern, scientists are exploring whether nature itself might offer some unexpected solutions.
