A tsunami of Chinese EVs is heading to (most of) us! At current rate, China's EV exports might double in one year, touching 5 million in 2026.
From a lithium perspective, the EV sales growth slowdown in China has been compensated not only by increased exports of EVs but also by a significant increase of the average battery size in domestic EV sales. BEV to PHEV sales have grown in the last 18 months from a 3:2 ratio to a 2:1 ratio.
@globallithium@SenTomCotton@DeptofWar Indeed @globallithium , North-America (US-Canada) is already a net exporter of lithium today, as actual demand for lithium chemicals in North-America represented less than 2% of demand last year (iLiMarkets 2025 global lithium flows). @D_Jimenez_Sch
Lithium 2025: from mine to consumption
China consumed 87% of the lithium mined globally.
Japan and Korea together 10%
The USA and Europe together less than 3%.
It makes very little sense to push for critical raw materials security if there is no market.
For this to change Cell production and later on CAM production needs to be developed and mastered.
Until then the bulk of Li production will en up in China.

HUGE moment for the EU car market as battery EVs overtake petrol cars for the first time ever
But there's no "natural" demand for EVs amirite?

Chilean economic development agency Corfo said on Monday it has submitted to the comptroller's office the terms of a modified lease agreement with lithium producer SQM through 2030.

In 2024, 90% of Li extracted globally was consumed or "passes" through China (production + imports).
China mined less than 20% of all Li mined globally.
It makes clear why China Inc has such an interest to keep money losing operations running in order to keep an over supply and be able to buy the 70+ % LCE it buys from abroad at a low price.
Western supply of critical minerals needs to be developed, but the rest of the supply chain also needs to be built out in US or allied countries. Battery cathode production in US still lags battery build-out, meaning raw materials will still be exported if produced in the US.
Just attending a 3-day workshop on the danger of abrupt ocean circulation changes. Discussions are quite worrying. E.g. in 35 to 45 % of high quality models, convection in the open North Atlantic collapses in the 2030s due to #globalheating. -> Major climate disruption. ☹️
SQM - Codelco Agreement signed
As of 2030, Codelco to take control of the 51-49 JV.
The agreement enables a smooth transition and that SQM´s technical and commercial teams continue projecting their work over their years.
Expansions to 300+ kMT-LCE become more certain.

Key points: EVs reduce emissions, battery minerals differ from fossil fuels. Future mining needs innovation, local value sharing, and strict governance.
A balanced approach is crucial for sustainable transition. $SQM

Our @Li4FutureTech project is coming to an end and we celebrated with an excellent meeting @NHM_London this week discussing all aspects of lithium resources. We're developing #Lithium mineral systems models, but still have more questions than answers!
The hacker has renamed Auke's account to @yunkicoinsoI. Someone set up a new account under @aukehoekstra, which used to be Auke's handle. The real Auke has opened a new account under @aukehoekstra123, but he would really like his old account back.
