@DataphytAcademy workshop was quite insightful for me both as a researcher and advocate. I learned the importance of having baseline to prove exactly how much of a departure current votes are from the norm. There are a ton of datasets that can be gleaned from elections today

SPECIAL ADVISER HADIZA BALA USMAN ADVOCATES STRONGER POLICY IMPLEMENTATION AT AGORA FELLOWSHIP CLOSE-OUT AND PORTAL UNVEILING
The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, and Head, Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU), @hadizabalausman has said that the future of governance in Nigeria will depend on sound policies, strong institutions, accountability mechanisms and measurable results for citizens.
Bala Usman made this remark today while delivering the keynote address at the Close-Out Ceremony of the Agora Policy Writing Fellowship and the unveiling of the Local Governance Accountability Portal and Policy Registry.
The event, organised by Agora Policy with support from the MacArthur Foundation, brought together policymakers, development partners, researchers, governance experts, civil society actors, journalists and emerging policy professionals to discuss evidence-based policymaking, accountability and citizen engagement.
The Special Adviser, described policy writing as one of the most critical tools for identifying societal challenges, evaluating options, setting priorities and driving collective action for the common good.
Speaking on the importance of policy coordination, she observed that while Nigeria has produced numerous policy documents and reform initiatives, a major challenge has been translating ideas into measurable improvements in citizens’ lives. She explained that this formed the development of the National Policy Coordination Framework, a government-wide initiative designed to improve policy coherence, alignment, tracking and accountability across ministries, departments and agencies.
The Special Adviser also highlighted the Tinubu administration’s ongoing reforms across public finance, revenue mobilisation, social investment, infrastructure, education, agriculture and economic inclusion, noting that their success depends on effective implementation, coordination and performance management. She emphasised that citizens ultimately judge governance by the quality of services delivered and tangible improvements in their daily lives.
Commending Agora Policy for sustaining the fellowship programme, the Special Adviser described it as a valuable investment in developing a new generation of policy professionals equipped to strengthen public policy formulation and implementation in Nigeria. She noted that the quality of policy thinking often determines governance outcomes, stressing that weak problem definition and poor analysis frequently lead to ineffective interventions.
She concluded by encouraging the graduating fellows to apply their skills in addressing public policy challenges, generating practical solutions and promoting evidence-based discourse.

Five years ago, I concluded my term as the head of NEITI, an experience I captured in my memoir 'The Arc of the Possible,' a book about how to get things done in the public service while holding on to one's values. I am in talks with @CablebooksNg to make the book open access.
