Mansa Musa, the 14th century African king of the Mali Empire, is widely considered the richest person to have ever lived. With an inflation adjusted fortune of over $400 billion.

He was known as Kankan Musa Keita, Emir of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, Conqueror of Ghanata and the Lion of Mali II, but today he is usually referred to as Mansa Musa and the Sultan of ancient Mali, which controlled the trade routes across the Sahara Desert.

Mali empire was a central to several key trading routes in the world, and with the support of well trained army, Mali became a strong and powerful empire.

Meanwhile On a pilgrimage of one of the Emperors of Great Mali Empire to Mecca in 1324 AD, Mansa Musa, brought so much money and gold with him that his visit resulted in the collapse of gold prices in Egypt, Arabia and the western world. It took another twelve years for the economies of the region to return to what it was.

On this day in 2006, U.S. sailor Carl Brashear passed away. He was the first Black American to become a Navy Master Diver.

Master Chief Carl Brashear fulfilled his dream in 1970 when he qualified as a Master Diver. Brashear overcame poverty, racism, and a life-threatening injury to become the U.S. Navy's first Black American Master Diver and first amputee diver.

Brashear’s left leg was critically injured in 1966 when he saved another sailor’s life. He nearly died of blood loss before doctors managed to stabilize him. Told it might take three years for the injury to heal, Brashear elected to amputee his leg to return sooner to diving. After a strenuous year of rehabilitation, he was restored to full duty. Brashear went on to pass his Master Diver evaluation with flying colors, making no mistakes during the challenging assessment.

Master Diver Brashear became a household name after his story was captured in the 2000 movie “Men of Honor.” For many, he has come to represent the power of perseverance and resilience. Brashear died in 2006 at the age of 75, but the legacy he created lives on.

Dear Harriet,

I am glad to know that the story of your eventful life has been written by a kind lady, and that the same is soon to be published. You ask for what you do not need when you call upon me for a word of commendation. I need such words from you far more than you can need them from me, especially where your superior labors and devotion to the cause of the lately enslaved of our land are known as I know them.

The difference between us is very marked. Most that I have done and suffered in the service of our cause has been in public, and I have received much encouragement at every step of the way. You, on the other hand, have labored in a private way. I have wrought in the day – you in the night. I have had the applause of the crowd and the satisfaction that comes of being approved by the multitude, while the most that you have done has been witnessed by a few trembling, scarred, and foot-sore bondmen and women, whom you have led out of the house of bondage, and whose heartfelt, “God bless you,” has been your only reward.

The midnight sky and the silent stars have been the witnesses of your devotion to freedom and of your heroism. Excepting John Brown – of sacred memory – I know of no one who has willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people than you have. Much that you have done would seem improbable to those who do not know you as I know you. It is to me a great pleasure and a great privilege to bear testimony for your character and your works, and to say to those to whom you may come, that I regard you in every way truthful and trustworthy.
