Video Games Europe is warning that some parts of the EU’s proposed KIDS Act could be too strict for video games.

The group says it supports better protection for children, but doesn’t think every game should require age verification for every player.

It also wants systems like PEGI and USK to continue handling game age ratings, with parents having control over what their kids can play.

The EU proposal could also introduce rules for features such as notifications, streaks and other mechanics that may encourage kids to spend more time in games.

California, Colorado, and Illinois have passed laws requiring operating systems like Windows and macOS to collect users’ ages.

California’s law starts in 2027. For now, simply declaring your age is enough, but companies could eventually use facial scans, government IDs or other verification methods to prevent minors from simply lying.

The really important part is that these laws could have effects far beyond the states that passed them. Apple, Google and Microsoft may decide it’s easier to build one age-verification system for everyone rather than completely different systems for each state

I don’t just want to get rid of online anonymity (you can use a nickname but need to have a government ID) for the purposes of age verification and protecting minors…

I am tired of all the phishing, the fake accounts and bots, the dead internet, the scams, the spam…

And guess what ends it… when you’re tied to your identity and legally liable.

While we’re at it, yes VoterID.

I’m not scared of a so called surveillance state run by a government that can barely operate the DMV…

And can’t balance a budget if our lives depended on it…

If our government had the competence of some of our adversaries I might actually be a bit more worried…
