What a scary situation and one that happens often- this is why we need to democratize the law and ensure people have the foundation they need to answer legal threats. He is right about his rights but not aware enough of the law to enforce it against his landlord’s attorney later.
Knowing our rights is critical, but knowing the law that gives rise to our rights is legal knowledge that we need to possess. Having that knowledge and confidence in the law and your capacity to navigate it is life changing. We see it with our students everyday.

These are HS students in NYC learning the exact same foundational legal courses as law students across the country. Students here are engaging in conversation around adverse possession during our property law sessions. The legal analysis skills of these students is impeccable.
