Isaias of Eritrea sold the Saudis the convenient fiction that “only littoral states can provide Red Sea security.” Yet when the Houthis blocked the Kingdom’s maritime lifeline and even struck its oil infrastructure, Asmara’s response was essentially: "there is no military solution"—in other words, we can’t help you. 👀🤔

Saudi Arabia mistook Isaias for a reliable partner, perhaps because Eritrea commands a significant stretch of the southern Red Sea coastline. But geography alone does not make a country a dependable security partner. Eritrea's near zero maritime trade, its puny economy and population should have been a clear red lights. By contrast, Saudi Arabia depends on the Red Sea as a vital artery for global trade and the export of its enormous hydrocarbon resources.

Eritrea’s foreign minister, Osman Saleh, has now gone even further, announcing the severing of ties with the UAE and Israel while accusing them "destabilization" and of “port colonialism.” The message could hardly be clearer: Eritrea is increasingly disengaged from the very maritime security architecture that Saudi Arabia depends upon. It has no will, or capacity to deter or contain the Houthis either.

And there is a broader lesson for Riyadh. Time and again, governments and actors that have placed their trust in Asmara have ultimately found themselves disappointed. Now it is Saudi Arabia’s turn to learn the same lesson.

The question is no longer whether Eritrea can offer Saudi Arabia meaningful Red Sea security. The question is whether Riyadh will finally reconsider the aid, political support and strategic patience it has extended to the Isaias regime.

Just to note, after the Ethiopia–Eritrea reconciliation in 2018, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh did visit Hargeisa in March 2019. During that visit, he referred to Somaliland as a "country" It's simply a matter of the historical record.

#BREAKING: Reports coming out of Tigray region indicate to a widening divisions within the TPLF, as senior military commanders resist demands from political leaders for a possible return to war. Several commanders—including officials overseeing intelligence, logistics and major fronts—could reportedly face dismissal, reassignment or house arrest.

Separately, discontent is said to be growing among some Fano leaders over the Tsimdo alignment involving the TPLF and Eritrea. Marishet Tsehayu, a prominent Fano figure, reportedly defected to the Ethiopian government on Sunday, while others may follow.
