Thank goodness for this post.
If you adopted BTC by force, I’m sorry this happened.
If you embraced it because it sounded like a good solution for underachievement, please read the post below.
If you still think it’s valuable for ACQUISITION instruction… I dunno man.
I’ll be presenting with Jessica Worden at rEd Toronto. Transitioning to Structured Literacy: The Evergreen Story 📖 I hope you can join us!

High school’s ‘ungrading’ misses mark, province orders return to midterm, final report-card percentages – Winnipeg Free Press https://t.co/hcligBpDp4 via @WinnipegNews
Grade 12 Pre-Calc exam averages are published in today’s Winnipeg Free Press. One standout? Evergreen School Division @evergreen_sd 🌟 — punching above its weight. Curious what they’re doing right? 🎧 I interviewed their superintendent earlier this year. Link below ⬇️
Mathematicians struggle w/ unsolved problems b/c they haven't been solved by anyone. They choose to work on them. Mathematicians have lots of knowledge & techniques that helps them tackle those problems. Don't compare kids who lack knowledge to mathematicians, who are experts.👇
Also @Tracy4Rossmere@WabKinew @nello4transcona, teachers aren't babysitters. They are professionals and they should be treated as such. They deserve high quality training as much as their students do. That includes strong content knowledge. Comment below is nonsensical.
Every child has the right to be taught to read within our public school system. It shouldn’t be something reserved for those who can advocate effectively, afford tutoring and access private assessments, as my family has been fortunate to do. 🇨🇦 #RightToRead#UniversalScreening
Manitoba Education is about to release a new ELA curriculum, I hope it is in alignment with evidence-based literacy instruction. I especially hope to see explicit learning outcomes in each grade and a move away from vague language such as “rich learning experiences.” @WabKinew

You asked why I think teaching math is so difficult. I'd list 2 main things: 1) its cumulative nature 2) students need a lot of practice w/ all the component parts before they can solve a problem that relies on the parts. But often 2) isn't happening - students get problems to solve and they can't b/c it hasn't been broken down enough or b/c they didn't get skilled w/ the component parts. Then, b/c it's so cumulative, things can snowball quickly and everything become difficult. Re. long division-take a look at how JUMP Math does it. For kids who have trouble, they have them work on each step for a few problems, gradually bringing in all steps.
1/n So here's the evidence we were given for BTC. You can go through & count the red flags based on the guide (it fails on every count), or you can use common sense. B/c anyone should be able to tell within 5 minutes that there's no evidence here that kids learned anything at all. https://t.co/G7EULBv8wq
