Huge steps taken these past two years to upskill teaching in an already fantastic school district
Evergreen School Division 🇨🇦 embraces the science of learning
1/2 Hilarious line in the Free Press article by former DM of MB Education, claiming he admires his colleagues in medicine.
❌Do your colleagues in medicine remove ALL subject requirements for doctors?
❌Do they rail against testing?
❌ And, unlike ed research, medical research follows the scientific method.
This former DM is complicit in removing all subject requirements for MB teachers, based on "math education research" which was little more than poorly argued, misinformed, opinion.
When a person has such low standards for what constitutes evidence, why would anyone trust what he says about Reading Recovery?
And then we wonder why fewer than 45% of MB Grade 3 students meet expectations in reading.
And he has the nerve to lecture us about "balance."

@TeachLearnGrow2@MrZachG Hi @TeachLearnGrow2 , this is a reference to one of our seven sacred teachings - Indigenous culture is really important to our Canadian identity. 🥰
🔍 How to deal with “research shows” claims.
Check out this great flow chart by Dave McAlinden, which perfectly captures the advice I shared in my talk at @researchEDCan. @MmeLockhartLDSB
Having a fab time in Gimli with @JessWorden and @sjhill1 at the wonderful @evergreen_sd - they’re doing such amazing pioneering work! And Gimli has a fascinating Viking connection!
This week included dinner with Anna Stokke and Scott Hill to discuss the state of math instruction - and let me tell you... it appears bleak until you visit Scott's school and realize a bit of commitment to Rosenshine can lead to quick gains! https://t.co/XfHGh7j6PR
@MrZachG The rehearsal is so important because the strategies seem so simple that we get a false confidence in our ability to carry them out.
Also: it’s called a touque! I’ll get you one next time you come to Evergreen!
Having teachers practice (ie group rehearsal) is the next frontier in PD.
Also: wearing a warm hat while in an outdoor hot tub when it’s -20 in Manitoba, Canada is good advice … stops your hair from freezing fyi 👍
Ahead of I Love to Read Month, I stopped by Winnipeg (w-i-n-i-p-e-g) Beach (b-ea-ch) School (s-k-oo-l).
@Evergreen_SD has overhauled how it teaches kids to read w/ new back-to-basics lessons. The revamp is unfolding amid the “new reading wars" #mbed#wfp https://t.co/HjFUCWAeQe
Direct instruction is joyful & leads pupils to success. Here is a *clip* where I use high frequency & high participation questioning in 3 phases:
1. Check for listening
2. Rehearsal
3. Check for understanding
Established routines: all hands up, turn & talk, SLANT & ruler reading
