@ThomasVanRiet2@JosephPConlon Regardless of IQ, we vote for the party that supposedly protects our interests. Academics: Left = Business: Right. Hard to defend the idea that a professor is surely smarter than an owner of a restaurant chain.
@AlessandroStru4@ThomasVanRiet2 Quantum info people have so much to learn from hep guys. I believed the paper to be the usual overhyped nothingburger from harvard/stanford/google/simons collab. cool boys club. It turns out it is (not) even wrong. Now back to discuss the "math. evidence" that AdS/CFT is right.
@AlessandroStru4 HEP theorists did the same. Being more clever than experimentalists, they concealed empty promises in sexy slogans like "string theory is so mysterious, we need 30/40/50 years (of funding) to understand it", and youngsters defend the field to have a job, rather than challenge it
@WKCosmo Illuminating about the sad state of theoretical physics. Just like CERN for exp., facts "must" agree with mainstream opinions, speculations "must be" considered truths even with no exp evidence, because too much has been invested at financial/political level.
@perrinjwalker@lokitekone@IAmNOTALao if you spend other 30 seconds googling, you'll discover that those credentials are nothing special in academia, i.e., 1000s of people have same or better cv
@DavidDeutschOxf@SteveStuWill Actually, those kids were much less free. They were forced to play and be friends with kids of the same playground/neighborhood, using always the same gadgets, etc Now they can go online and choose their crowd.
@perrinjwalker@IAmNOTALao@lokitekone Colorado college is a liberal arts college for rich kids that are too dumb to get legacy admission at harvard/yale and don't want to mix with poor people in state schools.
Science plays no role there, a "physics professor" there has the same status of high school teachers.
@Yi_Zen_Chu@AlessandroStru4@jordanbpeterson Who wants to work in Canada anyway??? Terrible physical and political climate, and less money than US.
It's a place for diversity hires and third world refugees.
@AlessandroStru4@lokitekone@CterminiPhD I don't go to conferences anymore (unless invited). I can read all the worthwhile science on arxiv + see seminars on youtube+zoom with collaborators.
Don't care about politics/career boosts/small talks with colleagues (we're very arrogant on average). Did I miss something?
@AlessandroStru4@ducciolvp I'm not sure she has "started" the party, can't keep track of name changes. But she's quite certainly not an affirmative action hire.
@hottaqu@quantum_graeme There's the need to make the world agree with one's philosophical biases. E.g., unitarity/determinism as a non-negotiable feature of nature.
@bourbaki_1934@wesyang I'm planning to ask to use the majestic plural for me, and become outraged if they refuse to accept my belief that I'm king of zamunda or something
@AlessandroStru4@jagunlabi_m@kareem_carr the serious argument is that pretending to be outraged for anything is much easier and financially rewarding than doing some good math during your phd
@AlessandroStru4@ducciolvp They often say that old white men "are afraid" of strong women having success and power. It seems to me the opposite: inclusion/equity people dislike strong/clever women like Thatcher,Rowling,Merkel, etc, and much prefer kamala and other similar dumb puppets
@robinhanson@Meaningness because things were actually getting done: atomic bomb, cryptanalysis of Enigma, etc
now they are "promised": every day you hear that "in X years" we will discover supersymmetry, have useful quantum computers, etc
@AlessandroStru4 That protest was a shame (Sapienza was founded by a Pope!), cancel culture at its best, and confirmation that nobel prizes, beyond their research subfield, say naive, opportunistic, silly things like the guy next door
