I was 25 years old in this photo.

I used to bartend lesbian night every first Wednesday. I was the only female bartender in a place with three floors packed wall-to-wall with lesbians - and I made tips hand over fist.

There were lesbians everywhere.

I worked there for years. I knew everyone, and everyone knew me. I wasn’t merely present in the lesbian community; I was woven into it.

That is why becoming disconnected from the community after I transitioned was so painful. Everything changed. The way people saw me changed. The way I moved through lesbian spaces changed. Eventually, I became almost invisible to a community that had once felt like home.

For seven years, I tried to erase the woman in this photograph.

Detransition has meant finding her again - and grieving all the years I spent believing she needed to disappear.
